The first lieutenant—Ogata Hyakunosuke—is far too old to be called young, and far too childish to be called grown. No matter; in Tsurumi’s eyes, he is still the brat who needs to be kept on a leash—untamable, feral thing that he is.
Tsurumi doesn't mind keeping the man on said leash. They've been here before. In fact, they never left at all.

Summary
All of the lieutenant's dogs are trained in similar fashion—tempted, rewarded, and then put in their place, rinse and repeat. A stray like Ogata Hyakunosuke, however, needs a firmer touch, a more appealing treat. Cats won't settle for less, and that much, Tsurumi has learned.

Vasya, still a young boy who only ever grew in height, was sent away from his home to be made a man. Vasya followed orders and was taught that being loyal, according to every authority figure he faced, meant turning your brain off and listening. Vasya developed apathy and learned how to store emotions for them to burst out on a later date. Vasya felt nauseous while praying.
Vasily hid from himself and the others.

The cold kiss of the gun against Ogata's lips, between his teeth, the metallic tang of steel, of gun oil. “If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t leave it to fate.” The familiar click of a cocked gun, the sound reverberating in his teeth, his gums. Tsurumi's voice is almost reverent. “But this. Now, what do you think your chances would be, Hyakonosuke?”
