He’s become all but a total recluse — reticent, he just buries his head in books and hunches over his typewriter for hours on end, writing stories nobody’s been allowed to read for months and getting lost in made-up paracosms to fulfill the gaping hole that El has left in his life — in their lives.
But it’s not fair, because act as he might, Mike wasn’t the only one who lost El.

Will Byers might only be sixteen years old, but he knows at least a few things for certain — he knows malted milkshakes are dimensions better than regular, and that Holy Grail is maybe the funniest movie ever written, and that popcorn at the movies just isn’t as good without Milk Duds and extra butter, nor is Coke as good without Pop Rocks fizzling at the bottom, and that he always gets third place in party bike races, and that trading comics with the party is so much more fun than reading them alone, and that Lucky Charms are only good ‘cause of the marshmallows, and that he doesn’t like girls. And that he’s never, ever, ever going to like girls.

He slams the phone back down onto the receiver with a loud clatter of plastic and metal as he mutters something about, “bullshit doctors, God, bet he ain’t even got no real degree, just a bunch’a nothin’,” before slumping against the counter again, chest heaving in eventual silence.

He hasn’t called home in forever, actually, not since sometime last month in November.
It was a month ago, the night of his second calc midterm, right in the dead middle of November. All he sort of vaguely remembers is that he was a mess of babbling tears over the line with Darry who was trying to ease him down from all his panicking that he was going to fail his test the next morning. Darry had reassured him over and over he was a smart boy, that he was sure Ponyboy studied real well, that the answers would come to him in the moment like they always used to. Pony really did let himself believe Darry’s affirmations ‘cause they let him pass out at his rickety kitchen table from exhaustion.
Turns out he got a 53.
So he didn’t call back home after that.

Of course his nemesis draws. Of course his nemesis draws so much better than he can.
Stupid Soc boy Paul Holden.
His nemesis has a couple of loose attempts at what’s clearly his big brother’s face and stature — something even Ponyboy himself can’t pull off yet, but they look just like Darry. The sort of sunken-in set of his eyes, and the little half-smile he does when he’s real happy, the way his jaw has squared out the last year or so, a bit of darker shading on his chin to represent what he shaves off every morning next to Dad in the bathroom. There’s so much care put into how these sketches look, clearly, ‘cause they’re the softest drawings on the spread, gosh, they look like love, and it makes Pony subconsciously smile a little before he realizes what he’s doing.

Darry’s eyebrows shoot up high on his face, but he cracks a bit of a frisky smirk anyway. “I kind of figured.”
Paul’s chewing on his bottom lip and he can’t quite seem to meet Darry’s eyes. Darry takes a step forward, bringing a hesitant hand up to Paul’s waist underneath the black gown that’s hanging off Paul’s shoulders. His fingertips just manage to find their way right beneath Paul’s ribs, and he begins to press them down into the cloth, sheepish and ghostly. It feels like home.
Except Paul takes a step back.
