“No,” Gideon said, because she was the worst. “What the fuck?”

When Joe moved into the empty building across the street from Andy's tattoo studio, Nicky wasn't happy. He told Andy so, loudly, in the middle of the street, when Joe was right behind him. So Joe plants flowers Nicky's allergic to in the planters outside the studio. Nicky graffities the back door of Joe's building. Etc. Both frequent Booker's bakery, but never at the same time. They're constantly competing at the yearly charity bake sales over who has the best baklava. Eight years later, they're still not on speaking terms.
Then Joe hires Nile, an art student at the local university, as a part-time assistant, and Quynh quits her job as a photographer for National Geographic and comes back, and Andy and Quynh start planning a wedding, and Joe and Nicky are going to have to speak to each other.

“I’m going to continue this trend of thoughtfulness and get you your order,” Joe decides, pointing his pen at him. “And I hope you’re hungry. Anything particular you’re in the mood for?”
The man looks at him and something flashes through his eyes, gone before Joe can recognise it. His lips curve up into something resembling a smirk, but it’s so soft it's more of a teasing smile. “Surprise me.”

Summary
“A fine justification. I’ve heard it so many times before” were the words Nicky spoke, and they were words he had heard so many times. From Kings claiming that the world would be better if they ruled to murders justifying the mass slaughter of people, evil will use the concept of the greater good as justification for their own horrific actions. While The Old Guard had seen that play out throughout history, this wasn't even the first time someone justified hurting them in the name of the greater good.

“No,” Booker says. He shakes his head. He’s looking between Joe and Nicky, at the space deliberately put between them, at the space he put there. “No, I can’t. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
“Mi amore,” Nicky tries, reaching out again to Joe. Andy can see the streaks of blood on his arms, his cheek, caking the back of his head. He’d been shot, Joe said. You shot Nicky. You shouldn’t have done that.
