The Apocalypse has happened. Adam has banned all angels and demons from destroying the Earth with their war. Crowley is reluctantly part of Hell's High Council, having manipulated the capture of Aziraphale, Heaven's soldier. But he remembers when there was more than Heaven and Hell, when 'our side' existed.
"Crowley's eyes flickered over Aziraphale. He knew the angel has been demoted from principality after Adam called Earth a neutral zone and sequestered away the planet from all angels and demons, leaving a blank desert firmament for God's creatures to have their final, ineffable war. And they'd made good on their promise within the blank space of the universe, spreading blood, avenging the Fall for Hell, crushing the Fallen in Heaven. The civil war that still haunted both sides. Adam said the Earth would have no part in it, and, banned from another second holy Eden once more, Adam cast all angel and demon from the Earth. None could enter. None could even find it."

Crawly is stifling a laugh as he braids one of the girl’s hair. “Like a pigeon, but white.” He offers.
“Oh,” says the boy. “My uncle got shat on by a pigeon once.”
“Well, I don’t need to do that,” Aziraphale says primly, “Just fly. Find land. And bring a sign of it back to Noah.”

After all, thousands of years falling in love with a being unable to feel love is something that can be eased into. Being hit with the realization that perhaps not all Demons, specifically the one next to him swinging the wheel of his car to the right in a way that is less like a lane change and more like a swerve just barely missing a building, are entirely incapable of feeling love is much more like a punch to the stomach.
