Summary
Psychomanteum, noun. A dimly-lit room containing a comfortable chair and a mirror angled so that it reflects only darkness, intended to communicate with spirits of the dead.
It is our privilege to welcome you back, one and all, for the Summer 2024 season at the London Athenaeum. As some of you will no doubt be aware, this past winter saw a spate of minor thefts, with one enterprising thief successfully removing a marble bust of the goddess Carpundia. We are pleased to report that the probate court proceedings are now complete, and all of the stolen artifacts have been returned to us. For safety reasons, we must now ask that all rosaries, japa mala, ojuzu, komboskini, misbaha and other similar prayer beads are left at the door and collected upon exit on account of one of our new acquisitions, a devil vitrified in a prism of glass, and the multiple recent incidents of attempted strangulation.
We are proud to present a slate of all new exhibitions and events, including the crown jewel of this season: an exhibition on the 170 year history of the Athenaeum itself by acting head curator Edwin Payne. This is the distillation of an extraordinary life’s work, and one not to be missed.

Summary
Rising from their woolen blanket spread over the forest floor, Edwin politely clasped his hands together. “I think I am going to turn in for the night, actually.”
Charles almost looked disappointed, though it was hard to pin anything down in the shifting lights of the fire. It was as though two different futures flickered over his face. In one, painted by the warm, orange glow softening Charles’ brow, and dipping into the inviting bow of his lips, Edwin saw a scene where he’d be allowed to pull Charles into bed with him. In another, cast by sharp shadows along his jaw, Edwin watched helplessly as Charles moved halfway across the world, and drifted further away every day.
“Right, I’m pretty tired myself. Won’t be far behind.” Charles said, and a selfish part of Edwin wanted to ask: but for how much longer?
Or, sometimes you just need a week long, post-university graduation camping trip to figure out the rest.

finishing this right as October hits has made the end of summer really hit. i don’t even have a particular attachment to summer but this is so beautiful in a non-beach reliant way. oh pnw how i dream of you and your seasons
also fantastic payneland, their dumb, inconvenient, incredibly valid emotions and assumptions and insecurities made this all feel even more beautiful and sweet

Summary
Charles could hear the sirens, dopplering closer as the lights painted the night blue. “I have to go,” said the boy, more to himself than to Charles. “If they catch me here—well. It doesn’t matter. You won’t remember this.” He smiled, and it was like the moon appearing shyly from behind a cloud. “Goodbye, Charles.”
Charles Rowland should have died at sixteen, but he didn’t. Three years later—eager to escape call centre purgatory—he joins the Lost and Found Department as a psychopomp, charged with escorting the recently deceased to their afterlives. But why does his new colleague seem so familiar, and what’s that persistent tugging feeling at his wrist?

Summary
Edwin Payne was the best necromancer the Fifth House had ever produced. Death had touched his hands and his mouth and his eyes, had cradled his skull and marked him as its favourite son. He had plumbed depths of Fifth House history that had slumbered untouched for centuries, mining long-forgotten seams of knowledge. He had bled for it, starved for it, broken himself open and hollowed himself out. He had made a home of himself for spirit magic, his legs its foundations and his ribcage its vaulted ceiling. He had spoken with the dead, and he had walked the River.
Which was why it was so embarrassing that he was about to be murdered in his bed by some two-bit thug.
Seventy-three years after he was pushed into the River, a liminal place filled with hungry ghosts, Edwin Payne has finally succeeded in clawing his way out. All he wants is to be left alone with his research, but to his dismay, the head of his House insists he take a cavalier to protect him – and to make sure he’s behaving himself. But not everyone is happy to hear that Edwin’s back, and when an attempt on his life by the very man who pushed him into the River all those years ago almost ends in tragedy, it’s time to get even.

Summary
"When they reached the door, Edwin peered through the glass as Charles pulled on the handle.
"Locked", Charles mumbled, unhappy. He straightened to look at the paper. The letters were clear enough, but they were mirrored, and it took Edwin's brain a few seconds to work them out. Charles did not seem to have that problem.
He read without hesitation: "Gym closed for the day due to weather warning."
Edwin stared at him.
"You read that mirrored so easily?"
"Yeah. Why?"
Edwin gestured helplessly, trying not to think about how attractive he found that. "That is witchcraft, Charles."
"One does try." Charles gave a modest shrug.
Edwin looked from the sign to the locked door and back again. "So. We are stuck.""

Summary
“Alright, listen,” Charles said, after trying not to think at all for at least five minutes. “Hear me out.”
“Any ideas?” Edwin asked, not looking up from his page.
“It’s just. What would actually happen if you cut my hand off?”
Edwin jerked his head up so fast, Charles wondered that he didn’t brain himself against the stone wall. He looked more offended than he had when he found out about the live snake in Charles’ bag.
“What the hell kind of a question is that?” He hissed.
“I’m not saying we should do it!” Charles backpedaled. “I’m just curious! These cuffs make us proper solid, don’t they? We could probably lop it off and get me out.”
“No,” said Edwin emphatically. “We are not discussing this. I don’t want you getting any ideas and chewing your own arm off like a trapped weasel.”
“Not my whole arm, just my hand.”

Summary
It's been a year and some change since Edwin stood on a step below Charles, bloody, beaten, green eyes sparkling, and told Charles that he was in love with him. He told Edwin it didn't change anything between them, and it didn't. But it didn’t necessarily do nothing to Charles. No, he actually thinks it might have changed him irrevocably and all that. Because lately, when it comes to Edwin, he's been aching.
Then, Crystal and Charles take on a new case: a ghost, 90 years old, still in the asylum she died in over sixty years earlier; lost and confused, and looking for her missing baby. As they work to untangle the story of this woman's life, they realise Edwin may be more wrapped up in it than any of them expected.

Summary
“Rowland has recovered from his illness”—Edwin had heard, after receiving a text from the man thanking him for the pot of soup he had dropped off—“and you two will be sent to Minsk to disable the device before it’s set off.”
“Both of us?” It wasn’t unusual for an agent and their handler to be sent to a location together, particularly when going undercover, but Edwin had never left the tomb of MI6 headquarters on a mission.
“You expect me to trust someone else with Rowland and this mission?” she returned. Something inside Edwin instinctually balked, and it must have shown on his face. “That’s what I thought.”

Go loud: a spycraft term, meaning to deliberately blow one’s cover — usually when there is nothing left to lose.
As Charles passes briefly through Edwin’s orbit, Edwin turns and leans in to kiss his cheek.
Charles feels the sting of the needle in his arm before he sees it.
“I’m terribly sorry about this, Charles,” says Edwin’s voice from the other end of a long, long tunnel, and then the dark rushes up to meet him, and everything goes black.

Summary
In the heart of winter, Prince Edwin's parents all but throw him out of his own castle with only an order to get to the kingdom of Port Townsend posthaste. Such is the life of a royal pawn, apparently.
But at least he's got Charles with him. Charles, his personal guard and best friend. Charles, who has a Lady he is courting at the castle. Charles, whom Edwin has loved in secret for years.
It's fine. Edwin is used to it. There's no reason traipsing through the kingdom on their own should change anything. It's only one week, after all.

Summary
"The spell forces honesty out of the afflicted target," Edwin says promptly. "I seem to be compelled to answer any question, as well as unable to lie when answering."
There's a brief silence while everyone takes that in - including Edwin, who immediately looks down at the floor, lips pressed tightly together.
"So this is your actual nightmare," Crystal deadpans. "Great."
After their near-miss in the Tall Forest, Charles feels that he and Edwin are finally getting back to normal - until the Cat King's meddling shows him just how much his best mate has been keeping from him. With the cat's magic forcing Edwin to tell the truth, Charles must help him navigate not only troubling questions and unwilling answers, but their own partnership and the secrets between them that threaten to change everything.
