“No you weren’t. You don’t joke. You don’t have a sense of humour. It was probably surgically removed from you as a child.” Wade paused. “Also, you like beer too much for that to have been a joke.”

“She’s right,” Dopinder said, from where he was polishing the countertop industriously. Under Dopinder’s care, Sister Margaret’s had become depressingly clean. Wade could even see the knobbly outline of his reflection in the countertop. “It’s getting warm too. It’d probably be sunny tomorrow.”

The mark on Jack’s arm burned from the center of his palm and all the way to his chest as he laid back for a rare moment of respite up in the church bell tower. He knew if he rolled up his heavy winter jacket sleeve that he would see the three thick black lines neatly zigzagging outwards from the center of his palm all the way to the black owl skull tattoo he willingly had inked over his heart. His mother and grandfather despised the ink work Jack paid for to get the tattoo and he understood why it hurt them so dearly when the lines from his palm were only halfway down his forearm that day when he got it. It was his destiny to die and the tattoo was extra salt in the wounds of his loved ones who pitied his fate from the day of his birth but loved him unconditionally regardless.

They were losing people, again, in numbers that made Reyes’ stomach turn and that he knew, he knew, would be lighting a fire under Jack’s ass. Drive the man to work harder, work longer, work himself down to the bone. See him holed up in his office, drinking too much and eating too little, going over the plans til his eyes twitched. See him down in the gym, throwing punches til his muscles screamed, til someone (Gabe, always Gabe) had to come peel his ass off the training room floor.
But as far as Reyes could tell, no one had seen him for the last six hours. Hadn’t heard from him, either.
It didn’t feel right. That was all.

Summary
It was always a foregone conclusion: brother against brother, light versus dark. It was going to be Reaper against Soldier: 76, Reyes against Morrison. There was no arguing this, there was no doubt-- it was meant to be. Destined. Perhaps this was why the sight of Jack Morrison's body came as such a shock, even to someone who had been hellbent on killing him for five years.
Gabriel has a postmortem conversation with Jack as he tries to come to terms with his rival's unexpected death.
