Summary
Clark can smell the drugs the moment he steps inside. The problem is he doesn't realize who they're intended for until after Bruce Wayne has already ingested them.
He watches as Wayne inelegantly extracts himself from the arms of a woman just to stumble into a man and do the same thing over again. Switching to X-ray when the tight pack of people obscures his vision, he observes the man staggering through the room, heading for a side door tucked in a dark corner. When the heavy door swings shut behind him, Wayne puts a hand on the brick wall and slides to his knees, shoes scraping against the wet pavement.
Clark blinks, swallows, and navigates the crowd.

When he was a child, Bilbo was told of soulmates. They were a legend, really, so rare they only happened in the shire every few hundred years- but his parents had sworn up and down that they were meant for one another, cut from the same cloth or different sides of the same coin.
Bilbo had believed, and wished himself- that one day he might find his other half.
And then his father died, and his mother turned into a shell of herself, alive but really quite half-dead.
She’d died a few years later of natural causes, yet far too young.
Bilbo wonders if there’s such things as soulmates in Dwarven culture.
Or: hobbits soulmates will die if their other half does. Bilbo finds out the hard way.

Sasuke lets him, curious to see how far he'll go.
"You're warm," Naruto says, with a hint of surprise in his tone. "Huh. Usually my imagination makes you cold."
Sasuke almost wants to laugh. Almost.
"Not a hallucination," he repeats.
"Yeah, sure."

He'd wondered if his soulmate would be kind, or beautiful, or smart, or any measure of any positive quality he could possibly come up with. It was his favourite pastime, keeping him awake when he was meant to be sleeping, sketching different versions of his soulmate in his mind, painting them with his imagination.
But his wrist remained blank.
OR
Clark Kent has spent most of his life without a soul mark. When one finally appears, he's overjoyed, but the one who holds its matching image is someone Clark thinks could not possibly be suited to him, at all. Bruce Wayne is vapid, and vain, and airheaded. At least, that's what he thinks.

Ed gets a better look, and sees a black ponytail and a sharp jaw, then looks away again, cheeks hot as he sits back down and starts hunting for another rock to throw. “Yeah,” he says. “Which you is that, exactly?”
“Don’t be a dick,” he answers, and sits down next to him, cross-legged and casual, starting to sift around in the sand for his own stone. Ed makes an educated guess.
“Ling?” he asks. It comes out quieter than he’d meant it, more hopeful. Ling smiles in that sun-bright way he has, and Ed’s heart stutters. Stupid, stupid.

So he goes to the one person who saved him from the blood and the scream of souls. This particular night the conversation becomes serious as Ed unloads some of his own anxieties on the Xingese prince.
