Shouta gently touches Hizashi's arm, just below the bandage. “Why do you hurt yourself?”
The question would normally make Hizashi shut down, push him away, but he's asking as an equal, as someone who understands, and not out of confusion and disgust and pity. He's not asking 'why would anyone ever do that to themselves', he's just asking 'what are your specific reasons'.
So Hizashi answers.Sometimes things are hard, but it helps when you have someone there to bandage your wounds.

The door would remain firmly closed. The two of them would engage in some more playful banter before Satoru would relent, sulking off to his bedroom.
Instead, the door moves. Suguru barely has a second to cover his arms with a blanket before light pours in from the hallway. Satoru stands in the doorframe, head cocked to the side, with a blinding smile.

Maybe that’s all it really came down to. Maybe that’s all that was necessary. Maybe loading each other with drugs and alcohol and platitudes was purpose enough. Waking up each morning just to see tonight’s blackout - the real prevention method here - would have to do, because at least it meant waking up each morning knowing that you’d both continue circling the drain together.
Wake up, spiral, black out, repeat. It was important to have a routine.
