He hadn't wanted to live then, not without Will. He didn’t want to live now. Not because Will was gone—he was just across town in Mike’s room, probably not thinking about him or where he was for even a second—but because he didn’t deserve to. Because he was wrong, because he was sinful, because he didn’t matter, because nobody needed him and they never had. He’d just wanted them to need him because he’d needed them.
All he ever did was hurt the people he needed. Why would anyone ever need him? He was–
“Mike, where the hell are you?” Will’s voice latched a tether around his chest, pulled him back, pushed down his younger voice, silenced Troy and James.

It's October 1986, the Byers have been living with the Wheelers for 3 months now, and Mike can't sleep through the night, waking to nightmares and struggling to reconcile his growing awareness of his feelings for Will with the expectations of everyone around him. It all comes crashing down around him very quickly and suddenly (though it was a long time coming).
