Summary
It’s a little heavier one, don’t read if you’re sensible. It’s an alternative take on how Jane and Lisbon get together in season 6. Canon diverges once Pike starts dating Lisbon and the DC plot doesn’t exist here. This is also a VERY different take on Pike!! But nothing that wouldn’t be impossible to happen on real life.
~ She could feel Jane’s nose against hers, his breath on her lips, their heads moved like they were going to kiss but both held back at the same time, desire and tension growing between them while both of his hands were holding her face, that was torture for both of them. ~

Rating: The theme is mature, but the story is T/PG-13
Canon: AU, You can plug this story in whenever you think it would fit best. I think it works best between Red Dawn and the Pilot, when Jane knows Lisbon enough to be attracted but not enough to think the better of his actions. The story changes Lisbon's backstory in a significant way but I'll leave you to find out along with Jane (excludes 4x22)

"Jane."
In the darkness, Lisbon reached out, searching.
The cold bite of metal handcuffs startled her. And then she remembered where she was.
A hand beside her grabbed her wrist. Metal clinked.
"Is that you, Jane?" She couldn't see anything. Only breathing. Then arms—familiar, warm—wrapped around her.
"You can't keep me in here, Jane." Her voice trembled.
"It's safe here, Teresa. Don't worry." His voice sounded strange. But she could hear the smile in it. He thought he'd done it this time. "You're safe, Teresa. Don't leave here. Don't leave me. We'll stay here forever, okay?"
...
Jane woke from a dazed sleep. He had forgotten what day it was. All he remembered was opening that door. Seeing Lisbon. A blood-red smiling face staring back at him. His phone rang. A message appeared. Jane suddenly remembered what day it was.
Or: Something happened to Lisbon. In his devastation, Jane found himself thrown back in time. Things seemed different now. Did he have a chance to mend what was broken? To fix the mistakes and the relationship that went wrong?

Summary
Patrick Jane does not realise he is in love with Teresa Lisbon all at once.
He realises it in pieces: in tea made without asking, in a crooked tie fixed before an interview, in her voice cutting through the dark before he can drown in it. Lisbon realises it harder, after the apartment feels wrong without him in it and the silence starts to feel less like peace and more like absence.
The team notices after that.
Cho notices first, because of course he does. Van Pelt notices because Lisbon smiles differently. Rigsby notices last, dramatically and far too late for his dignity to survive intact.
But when an old enemy of Jane’s comes back with bodies, messages, and a plan designed to tear him apart, the team finally sees the truth beneath all the teasing, domesticity, and quiet office touches.
This was never casual.
Patrick Jane survived losing his wife once.
He would not survive losing Teresa Lisbon.

After Lisbon's direct dealing with Red John she's more than unsettled. Sleep eludes her as she turns over what happened over and over in her head. Jane may say he isn't psychic, but he knew just when to turn up at her place to provide reassurance. The reassurance he was planning to provide though takes a surprising turn.
