Summary
Dave Strider has always lived his life fighting in the war that took America by storm years ago when the initial nuclear bombs dropped, destroying the country. In a near-death experience, he meets a new and much more sheltered species. He finds himself living a life he never imagined existed in the world that he lived in now, but there he was, growing soft for a boy who had no idea of the troubles and navigation of the overworld.

Summary
Karkat Vantas has always been too "soft" to be a troll. He feels too deeply and cares too much. Maybe that's why, after being left as a stationary pawn of the Alternian Empire, he starts to save the very people he's supposed to subjugate.
Dave Strider has always assumed that he exists to be the world's punching bag. When he's captured by an overzealous Alternian cop and brought before the Provincial Commander, he expects his life to end. Instead, it starts anew.

Summary
"They think I'm mad. The University refused funding, the Archaeological Society laughed me out of their quarterly meeting, and even Roberts, my most loyal colleague, has abandoned the expedition. But I know what I saw in those fragments from the '48 dig. The symbols on the cartouche don't match any known dynasty, and the material composition is unlike anything documented in Egyptian archaeology."
—From the Personal Journal of Jacob Harley, March 3, 1958
Almost seventy years later, Jacob's granddaughter Jade finally proves he wasn't crazy. The device buried beneath Egyptian sands is real, and what lies beyond that ancient ring will change everything.
When John Egbert reluctantly accepts command of humanity's first team through the portal, he expects a routine mission. Instead, he finds himself leading a team of Earth’s brightest into a universe far stranger and more dangerous than Earth ever imagined.
Some doors, once opened, can never be closed again.
