Fern, her body riddled with wrinkles and covered in layers upon layers of clothing sidled up next to her master. "Right, it was really easy."
The girl sitting next to her was a girl no longer, and felt more fragile than a castle made of sand. Frieren clutched her disciple's hand, realising how rough and weakened her hands had gotten over the years.
Like a rushing waterfall, she realised that the girl she had known for her entire lifespan's life was about to end.

His shirt and his leather chaps would have once been of good make though they’re now worn and dusty, and the silver spurs on his boots mark him as anything but a laboring man. Whoever he is, he must have been well off… at some point.
“What’s your name, son?” Peleus asks, a friendly yet cautious smile on his lips. Everyone around these parts has learned not to be too trusting of strangers.
“Patroclus, sir.”

Life was also dreadfully, mind-numbingly boring. The days blurred into one, each one like the next which was like the next and the next. Even the nights he spent drinking with friends - an activity that he had once waited in giddy anticipation for - had devolved into a simple, unchanging routine.
Which must be, then, why Hermes was so willing to go through with the first ridiculously ill-advised idea that popped into his head, all in an effort to combat his increasing boredom.
