Summary
Wei Ying’s life is flying apart at the seams.
Every day he spends trying to hold together the pieces of it: his career, his family, his own health as he careens towards a breakdown.
But every night, he finds himself enveloped in silence. A gray world, with only the quiet of wind and leaves and grass and water. And the man, beautiful and straight-backed and steady, as much a part of the landscape of the dream as the lake or the sky.
Wei Ying doesn’t know what to do with these dreams. He supposes they come from his yearning for peace, except he has never known himself to want this quiet grace. Maybe the soul hungers for things far out of sight from the mind. Perhaps what he needs is this gentle, gray landscape filled with silence.
Then, the man speaks, and the world begins to fall into color.

Soda closed his eyes against the panic clawing its way up his throat, still facing the stove even as Two-Bit and Steve spun towards the doorway where Darrel was standing, looking more frantic than either of them had ever seen him. Steve stared at Darrel with wide eyes and Two-Bit’s eyebrows rose, slowly swiveling to look at Soda, who was white-knuckling the handle of the spatula in his hand. The kitchen was completely silent.
“I hit him,” Darrel repeated, barely above a whisper, “and he ran away.”

Wei Ying has a lot on his plate right now.
It’s finals week -- which isn’t so bad. He’s never had to study much to do well in classes. But that just means that things are that much more tense with Jiang Cheng, who, as far as Wei Ying can tell, only takes study breaks long enough to glare at Wei Ying where he sits on the couch playing video games.
It’s not studies that have Wei Ying stressed out. It’s everything else. It’s the recruitment for the research trial he’s coordinating. It’s jiejie and her impending marriage to His Royal Douchebag Jin Zixuan. It’s the volunteer work at the palliative care facility. It’s Wen Ning’s worsening condition. It’s Wen Qing working herself thin to care for her brother and Wen Yuan. It’s the way Wen Yuan never seems to have enough food.
There’s enough on Wei Ying’s plate already, meaning it’s not entirely welcome when he comes home and finds a man standing in his bedroom. A man in extravagant white robes, a ribbon tied around his forehead, long hair gathered into a topknot, fist clutching a sword at his side, who asks him, “Where am I?”

“I’m fine,” Darry mutters again, but it’s even more hollow now, more useless. Soda’s still crouched at his other side, one hand steady on Darry’s wrist like he’s grounding him there.
“No, you’re not,” Pony says, but there’s no judgment in it. Just truth. “And that’s okay.”
Darry lets out a breath that sounds almost like a laugh, except it’s broken in half. He drags both hands down his face and then presses his palms into the edge of the table like he needs something to hold on to. “I ain’t ‘sposed to fall apart. Not in front of you two.”
“Why not?” Pony asks. “We fall apart in front of you all the time.”

A month and a half after the funeral, Darry’s doing his best to hold everything together. But the broken pipe, the long days, and one sharp argument with Ponyboy push him past his limit. When he breaks down in the kitchen, it’s his brothers who help him — quiet, steady, and refusing to leave. It still hurts. But they’re in it together.
