“Hm?” Ilya tried hard to focus on Shane’s words but Shane felt too good, the pressure of his ass on Ilya’s crotch too maddeningly distracting.
Shane leaned in so that his mouth was now right on Ilya’s ear, stilling his movements. “I said,” he breathed hotly, “you like it? Being my dog?”
And this was new. The words sent an electric shock down Ilya’s spine, making him involuntarily thrust up into Shane. Ilya swallowed, closing his eyes and nodding furiously, as Shane nibbled on his ear lobe and sucked sweetly at the skin there.
“Speak,” Shane said simply, the same tone he used when talking to Chiron or Anya. When talking to dogs.
“Fuck,” Ilya choked out. “Yes, da, yes, I like being your dog.”

A really great fic that goes to explain how and why the sub top Ilya trope works so well!! Shane’s control is a part of his character growth and Ilya’s submission has always been there, but now that they’re out and open it’s like a no brainer that this is the dynamic they fall into!

To me this is THE hollanov AU fic. Everything about it is perfect. The author perfectly curates scenes from the show/book to intentionally fit into their universe and truly — and i mean truly — highlight the character qualities that make Shane and Ilya. God, I’m sobbing.

WRONG. this is the kind of story that makes you pause and want to cry yourself to sleep, but you can’t because it’s all too real. with the multiple povs from the characters it really brings to light how ilya’s depression affected everyone around him and how he matters to so many more people aside from shane. beautiful beautiful story.

Ilya could count the number of times they had met on one hand, and they had only been playing in the NHL for a few months, so he had to have misheard him. He grabbed the remote and went back a few seconds, and he was certain. Shane had just said “Ilya”, on national television, in French, and Ilya was sure he was going to die from the massive rush of blood that shot to his dick.
This made no sense. Why would Shane, who had never called him anything except Rozanov, start calling him by his first name to a random French lady on some Wednesday?
TL; DR: 5 times Ilya interpreted the French translation of “there is” (which is il y a) as Shane Hollander saying his first name and one time Shane actually did say it.

Summary
Shane and Ilya have been together--officially-- for two years, and it's been going relatively well despite all the itty-bitty bumps on the road. Having to date in secret is never 'light and breezy'. It's definitely not light and breezy when Shane's childhood best friend visits.
It's okay at first, nudged shoulders and inside jokes Ilya didn't understand. The second the nudges got too intimate, when the jokes got too sexual is when he realized something was off.
He stays quiet, plays along, tries his fucking hardest not to punch Nathan goddamn Hales square in his annoyingly handsome face.
When Ilya does talk to Shane about it, admittedly in the worst way possible, a fight breaks out. regrettable word choices are made, and a door is shut.
And it was all Nathan fucking Hales fault.
