When Ilya lived in Boston he always wondered what it would be like to show Irina the city he thought of as home. He’d see other families with their kids at the Common or the Aquarium and always think, zaychik would love that. It almost felt like a dream to see Irina and Shane walking in front of him as they crossed through the Public Garden. They were laughing at something Irina had said, Shane shaking his head at whatever it was. He had pictured this so many times. There was no part of him that wanted to miss a second of this, not even to blink.

“I need to do this,” she whispered despite her closed eyes and the scrunched up expression that always signaled she was in more pain than she let on.
“You don’t have to do it right this second, you’re sixteen,” Shane said softly, brushing her hair away from her face the way he remembers his mom doing.
“When do hockey players retire?” Irina asked and her eyes opened.
“Depends, mid thirties. Some people will play until their forties,” Shane answered.
“Do you know when figure skaters retire?” She asked and he shook his head, “early-twenties. Lots retire as soon as they go to Olympics. You can try and last until your thirty but not many do. Too much pain.”

“Still want to hunt me?” Rozanov smirked and Shane slapped his chest.
“Asshole,” he huffed. Part of him wanted to sit up but he was tired. His stamina couldn’t keep up with Ilya’s.
“Rest,” Rozanov said softly, tracing circles into his skin. It made it harder to keep his eyes open.
“Rozanov,” Shane mumbled sleepily. This is how things usually went. Shane, tired and spent, Ilya, a watchful eye as the Hunter rested better than he did without the vampire.
“I stay,” Rozanov’s deep voice assured him.
Shane always promised this time was the last time.
It never was.

Shane gave him a watery smile, his eyes already welling up at the thought of whatever this could be.
The sight made Ilya feel murderous. As much as he cared about some of the people in this room, he could absolutely kill them right now for what they were doing to Shane. He had done nothing but give all of himself to his team, his loved ones, to Ilya. He didn't deserve to be tricked into some kind of group confrontation this way.
"Well? Are you going to fucking tell us what this is or you going to just sit here and make moy lyubimy cry for no reason?" Ilya barely restrained himself from yelling, his voice reverberating around the unnaturally quiet space.
"That!" Hayden shouted, pointing at him. "That is exactly why we're here, Rozanov! Your temper!" He jabbed his finger at Ilya with each word for added emphasis.
Ilya scoffed. Did Hayden actually expect him to believe they rounded up the world's weirdest version of the Avengers just to have a chat with them about him being a little moody?
...
Shane has adopted a new absurd performance regimen for the playoff season and Ilya (plus everyone around him) is dealing with the effects of it. An intervention follows.

He needed to eat the same thing, every day. Train in the best way to keep his mind and body fit by keeping to strict programs. He needed to stick to his plan so that he could ensure that everything also went, well…to plan.
He needed all of these things to fall in place otherwise— well he tried not to think too hard about the otherwise. He couldn’t let otherwise happen.Basically he’d treated his body like a fucking temple for majority of his life and had no problems with it yet— And then he turned 30.
