Summary
“Stay, stay, please Robby, don't go, stay," he chanted over and over again the way Robby imagined he used to recite scripture in church. Robby thought that even the holiest of words could sound filthy in the mouth of Dennis Whitaker. And, Robby knew that Dennis didn't go to church anymore, but he could feel something divine radiating from him. That heavenly light begged him to stay, too.
"I have to go," Robby said into his lips. "If I don't go now, I'll never go."
"Don't go," Dennis whispered, tangling a hand in his hair. "If you go…"
His voice faded out of Robby's focus as he droned on in that sweet, delicate whisper. All Robby could feel was how his hands roamed all over him, and his lips formed words and kisses against Robby's with little care for which was which.

"I left my gear in my truck from a job I had this weekend— I can grab it," Whitaker nodded, looking more determined. He took off his stethoscope and nametag, stashing them behind the nurses' station. He was off before Robby could protest, passing Dr. Santos, who looked at him with confusion.
"What are you doing?"
"Saving the bees!" Whitaker hollered behind him, doing a tiny fist bump that made Robby's chest tighten, and he dragged his hand over his face to hide his widening smile.

“Robby doesn’t even have a team,” Whitaker complained, and the lack of honorific was so obvious in hindsight, though right then Dana had hardly questioned when the resident had gotten so comfortable with the attending. “He just roots for whoever is playing against Philly.”
“City loyalty,” Robby emphasized again, causing the younger man to roll his eyes once more and huff out an exasperated sigh.

“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”
And just like that, the bubble popped.
“I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.
He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.
