Summary
“You probably do not think this is cruel,” GLaDOS says suddenly, not taking her gaze from the mouse for a second, “After all, you have such enormous capacity for cruelty, I doubt you can recognise mistreatment even when it is right before your eyes. However, a normal human with basic abilities of empathy, love, and compassion, would correctly identify my treatment of this animal as cruel.”
Chell says nothing.
“However, if this experiment were to be submitted to an ethics committee, it would receive full approval. Cruelty, in and of itself, is not wholly banned in science, after all. It is simply needless cruelty, the kind you excel in, that is not permitted. What I am doing is necessary for testing conditions. What I do is the only way for knowledge to progress.”

Summary
Miranda Lawson spent two years bringing one person, the famous Commander Shepard, back to life. She'd researched her thoroughly, from her ten (now perfectly proportioned) toes all the way up to her recently rehabilitated brain. At the very least, she shouldn't have been surprised when Shepard woke up and absolutely loathed her.
Garrus knew his best friend was dead. When Shepard proves him wrong, she's not exactly what he was expecting.
Mass Effect 2 re-tell through the eyes of Miranda and Garrus.

Shepard doesn’t like anyone. It’s not that she’s misanthropic; it’s just that in the light of a Reaper invasion, there aren’t a lot of people who are worth her time. Love, however… Love she has time for.

She was just some drunken woman he had arrested one night. Just another report to file and another crime to add to his resume. Just another face in the millions that lived around him.
She made sure to prove him wrong.

Summary
Shepard's better at making enemies than friends. Her words are a blunt weapon that she never learned to use, and whenever she swings, somebody gets hurt. She kills to make up for it, shoots the assholes that want to burn the galaxy; she fights to protect it just to prove that somewhere underneath the bravado and the scowl, she cares. Maybe someday she'll look down at all the blood on her hands and believe it.

Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it from someone more interested in the wording of your wish than the spirit. Joker explains to Shepard why'd he'd trade his brand-new, Cerberus-funded legs for the old broken ones in a heartbeat.

Summary
Garrus thought that playing a video game or two would provide a good distraction for Shepard. After all, she badly needed some distractions.
(It never occurred to him that she would be so very bad at it.)
