"See? I just knew it," Hans says, poking Henry's chest. "I knew you’d be too damn hairy. Look at all this. You're practically a barbarian."
Henry's snort is fond when it leaves his lungs, more exhale than sound. "You're hairy too," he offers graciously, flicking his eyes down a pale chest. His memory conjures up images of blond tufts—darkened with water, clustered beneath a navel, peeking coyly from under an armpit—before he banishes them. "It's just hard to see on your arms and legs, cause your hair is so fine. It makes your skin look soft," he adds, crazily, airing a thought that should have been kept barred and bolted.
"Do you think about my skin often, blacksmith's boy?"
"No." Henry is distracted; Hans's finger is twisting around his chest hair, an entirely new sensation for Henry's body. His spine tingles. "Maybe. I dunno."

Hans keeps insisting that Henry share his bed. A very normal and platonic thing to do.

“You don’t say please. You don’t.”
“Please,” he says again, and drags out each letter, and Henry should oblige, but his own body is pliant in Hans’s presence, like water, or clay.
Strange, flipped, subverted, this hesitation. Outside of this room, Henry has no hesitation when it comes to Hans. Out there in the world, his golden pourpoint covers the marks Henry leaves on him, hiding these blemishes against his unquestionable authority. Inside, naked, nowhere to hide. Uneasy equals. And one always trying to capitulate to the other.

“Do you remember what you told me before that battle?”
Henry’s eyes search his. Hans knows that he knows although he says, “Remind me.”
“You told me that courage in the face of fear is a knightly virtue,” Hans says, kicking at a loose pebble at his feet. It skitters between them, settling just shy of Henry’s boots. “And that being brave is something that you have to learn.”
Henry kicks the stone back. “Are you afraid now?”
Opportunities present themselves at the siege of Suchdol, and love makes Hans brave.

"Are you cold?" Henry asked.
Without armor, in hose and gambeson, he was still an imposing figure: tall and broad, hands stained with dirt and blood, jaw stubbornly stiff. His bare feet were a shock of white in the dirt. He held his helm with both hands, embracing the metal into his belly. His hair was damp with sweat. There was another string of bruises on his throat, shaped like two wide thumbs.
Hans looked away. The tunic around Henry's knee had darkened. Blood was trickling into the dirt.
Hans kills a man, prepares for a wedding, and tries to do at least one thing right.
(Or: five times Hans and Henry didn't share a bed, and one time they did.)

"You are welcome," Viktor says dryly, leaning into his cane with a faint shift of his weight. He looks amused. "Unless, of course, you would prefer I announce our separation now and leave you for the remainder of the evening?"
The thought sends a jolt of panic through Jayce. Before he can stop himself, he blurts, "No! I mean—this is fine. Let's just . . . keep this up. For now."
"For now," Viktor echoes. He studies Jayce for a moment, his golden eyes sharp and unreadable. "Very well. Consider it an arrangement of convenience."
"Exactly," Jayce mutters, still flustered. "Convenience."
Jayce is trying to avoid the women that flirt with him at an after-party. Viktor pretends to be his boyfriend.

Jayce's attention leaps back to the mattress. It's not big enough for two people. Not comfortably. Viktor must know that. He's a genius, after all, and surely even he can do basic spatial calculations. They'd practically have to be on top of each other to fit.
"Yeah, but . . . it's—"
"I am tired, Jayce. The floor is cold. You are being ridiculous."
A storm, one bed, and a certain man lead to some questionable decisions on Jayce's part. He'd planned to stay on his side of the mattress—but the world is too complicated for that.
