Summary
Finding your soulmate is supposed to be beautiful. You stand in front of someone and you say their full name; they say yours. Your soulmarks appear somewhere on your bodies, and it's supposed to be beautiful. Life-changing.
It's not supposed to happen a week before the World Juniors tournament in a dirty Saskatchewan parking lot. It's not supposed to be Canada's newest darling hockey player and your future rival who whispers your name. It's not supposed to be a boy that your skin blooms for.
And if that does happen, despite the fact that it shouldn't, you're definitely not supposed to lie to your soulmate's face, refuse to say his name in return, and pretend that you never felt your soulmark appear at all. And if that happens, somehow, you're definitely not supposed to kiss him less than a year later. And then later. And then later. And then later, until you realize you never want to leave his bed despite the fact that you've never told him the truth about the bear tattoo on your chest.
or, finding out that his soulmate is Shane Hollander isn't beautiful. Ilya can't pretend that it's not life-changing though.

“And here I was going to behave, ask if I am yet allowed to touch you.” Ilya reaches between them to capture Shane’s chin between thumb and forefinger, looking intently into his eyes for a half-dozen heartbeats or so. Then his lips are on Shane’s, a warm press of mouths turned wet as Ilya slides his tongue between Shane’s teeth.
“It was so fucking annoying, not being able to,” Shane grumbles into Ilya’s mouth, breaking the kiss so he can nuzzle Ilya’s pulse instead. “Not wanting this is stupid as hell.” As he rubs the underside of his jaw into Ilya’s shoulder, he feels the alpha’s low chuckle vibrate through to the base of his own spine, making him squirm.
“For once we agree on something, Hollander. You are very stupid and annoying.”
Some months after Shane recovers from rejection sickness in Ilya's bed, they share their heat/rut together at the cottage, both clinging to the delusion it's still casual.

It could look like Prongs; it could run like Prongs; but it could not act, communicate, or greet old friends like Prongs. It was simply not possible. It had never been done. It broke all the rules of Patronus magic that Remus had ever known, which was, quite frankly, most of them. But Harry had somehow done it, because the Patronus in front of him was clearly and unmistakably,
“Prongs.”
Prongs jerked his head down from his howl, nudged Remus in the chest with his muzzle, and disappeared.

Summary
Sirius studied Remus’ face. He was curious what he thought of all of this, the only one of them who didn’t have a mark– theoretically– and the only one with a muggle parent. Muggles didn’t get marks, he knew. If Remus’ parents were soulmates, then they wouldn’t know it. He wondered if there was a way to tell, though. If they could just feel it, somehow, even without the help of some magical fate.
Because it seemed like something you would just know, just from being near someone, from being close enough to them, from being in the same space. Like their souls would attract like magnets or like water droplets traveling down a window, waiting to merge until the last moment when they realized they were on the same path, and then they’d become one.
Was that fate, Sirius wondered?
He realized Remus was staring back at him, his eyes puzzled and curious and warm.
Sirius looked away first and didn’t look back, pushing down something heavy and impossible in his chest.

Non-magic Wolfstar AU romance set in contemporary Seattle. Sirius is a mixed race White/Japanese trans man, and an assistant librarian at the Seattle Public Library. Remus is Latino and an HIV+ homeless college student and sex worker. There are some angsty bits, but overall it's not a downer.
