Everyone knew about soulmates. You physically couldn’t escape knowing. Not when an odd bruise or paint splotch or doodle you know you didn’t put there showed up on your skin. Everyone was connected to a total stranger, against their will, by means of skin. So, why on gods green earth did Virgil seem to be the only person freaked out by this? As a kid your told to never speak to strangers, then your told that you’ll fall in love with one? Really? Who came up with that shit? Soulmates are, in Virgil’s expert opinion, a waste of time, meaningless and if anything? Utterly useless.

Summary
After the Dendro Archon gets rid of the Akasha, the people of Sumeru are able to dream again. Along with dreams, a new phenomenon has begun to occur in which two individuals can share a dream. In Sumeru, the only person you can naturally share a dream with is your soulmate. The only downside is that once the dream is over, the only identifiers the dreamer can remember about their soulmate in order to find them are their names and a vague idea of what they look like.
In which Kaveh and Alhaitham start sharing dreams and Alhaitham hides the fact that they’re soulmates from Kaveh.

Summary

Alhaitham grew up on the belief that the Akademiya was corrupt, as was the royalty, and Sumeru was doomed to someday fall. But Kaveh wasn't like them. Kaveh was fire burning bright, passion itself, and he was certainly not his father. He wasn't, nor ever would be, a tyrant.
Alhaitham would make sure of it.
“You detest me,” Alhaitham said quietly, breaking the silence. It was hard to finish with that, hard to form the words when there was so much more at hand than just how they may have felt toward each other. After all, they stood in a literal hell, the flames still flickering and smoldering out.
The bodies still lay bloody around them.
Kaveh stared. Not at him, but at the hill surrounding them. He took it in, everything in its brevity, and let out a slow breath. Then he turned back to Alhaitham with no light behind those ruby eyes, with all the pale coldness of a man he'd once killed. He smiled and repeated, knowing his line by heart. “I detest you the way the sun detests the moon. You cannot have one without the other, but they chase each other away all the same.”
