Summary
The bathroom was still steamy from the shower, but the center of the mirror had cleared enough for Noctis to take a good look at himself. The tired lines under his eyes seemed deeper if possible, his tan lines were bad, and his hair stuck up funny on one side from sleeping on it. None of that really seemed to matter now that he had feathers sprouting all over his back.

Or: After mysterious circumstances cause Noctis to grow wings, he and his retinue must learn how to cope with them on their journey. Noctis seeks a cure, but something has a hold on him he can't quite shake- and it doesn't seem to be finished with him yet.

Summary
Martin had never been the type of person to listen to popular music. It made him feel ridiculously pretentious to say it, but it all felt so superficial. All those songs about love and sex and breakups felt so… detached. Emotionless even as the singer was supposedly pouring their heart out.
He supposed this was part of the reason he liked poetry. Good poetry, where the feelings are so strong you can almost taste them, where you can hear the sounds pinned down by ink on the paper. Martin had been trying his hand at writing his own stuff recently, but it was never much good. It always felt so cliche.
This is probably just a long way of saying that he liked a good story, and definitely a roundabout way of explaining why he enjoyed listening to the Mechanisms so much.
(or to put it another way, Jarchivist Sims is Jonny D'Ville and Martin doesn't realise. Gay shenanigans occur. Now with Angst™)

“The Watchers Crown,” Annabelle says. “I would like you to undo it.”
“We’ve tried,” Jon snarls, and Martin tightens his grip on his hand. “There’s nothing to be done about it.”
“You haven’t had my help, nor the Mother’s,” Annabelle says. “It is a tad bit too late now, I must admit. We are well past the window of opportunity to unfuck ourselves, I’m afraid, but there’s still… time.” She doesn’t laugh, but there’s still an air of a joke about her. “If you’re willing to travel to find it.”
There’s a beat of silence, Annabelle clearly waiting for something.
“Oh my God,” Martin says suddenly. Jon is staring at her blankly, either uncomprehending or flabbergasted. “Are you seriously suggesting - you’re not,” he continues, because she can’t be, he must be misreading the situation somehow. “You have to be joking,” he says, desperate, “You’re not suggesting time travel.”
Annabelle cocks a perfectly-manicured eyebrow, smiling serenely, and Jon bursts into hysterical laughter.

Summary
The things that are Kind-Of Jonathan Sims and Mostly Martin Blackwood have been alive for just over 200 years. No, scratch that, they've been Avatars for 200 years exactly. They very much died when the Magnus Institute was burned down, one year after it's opening.
Now they're just trying to enjoy their new lives and interact with their Patrons as little as possible. But when the Beholding decides it's time to try for it's ritual, and the Web wants to stop it, each is assigned the task of tracking down The Fearless One, to use her as sabotage for the other. Neither are particularly thrilled by this task, nor the concept of the end of the world, which if they're being honest they're really quite fond of.

“Do you guys think Jon is attractive? Be honest,” Melanie mused, leaning back in her seat in exactly the way Jon was always telling her not to. Martin carefully ducked his head under the desk, pretending to be searching for another errant paper. He was paranoid that something in his face would betray his answer to Melanie’s question. Could other people sense when your heart was beating quickly? He didn’t think so, but just to be safe he wrapped his jacket more closely over his chest to muffle the hypothetical sound.
He didn’t even know what answer he’d give anyway. He certainly couldn’t just tell the truth. Some of them probably suspected – Georgie and Melanie more likely than the others. But he couldn’t bring himself to speak of it openly. It was easier if he let them imagine that they might be wrong and it might not be true – if he let them imagine that they could cut him some slack. That he might have enough dignity not to fall for someone who was so hopelessly out of his league and who, as everyone could very obviously discern, would never, ever, ever, ever view him as anything but a quasi-competent co-worker.

He doesn’t have much reason to suspect anything too far out of the ordinary when he heads down to University College Hospital on a hunch to visit the man who may or may not be dead.
The man’s name is Jonathan Sims: a failed academic by all accounts, though what he’d been doing before the explosion that threw him into a six month coma is at the mercy of baseless public speculation. Now he’s lying in an empty ward with no heartbeat, dreaming.
It seems like enough to fill a slow news day.
