He usually does stay late. Finishing paperwork, signing autographs, you know.”
Reaching for the energy drink he’d been working his way through for the past half hour, he jerked it towards her while poking a finger in her direction. “Every day except today. This time, every week, he’s out of here right on time. Like clockwork. Not even a minute late. Not once.”

We join our heroes as they approach and enter the looming manor, inside of which dwells the scene of the crime. Winding hallways of painted plywood protect a secret, and the duo traverses them bravely despite the weight of the house’s darkness on their spirits.
“It’s a n-nice house, isn’t it?” Chuunosuke squeaks, wide eyes firmly fixed upon the manor’s fine decor. If his voice does squeak, it is only on account of his mouseness, and if he appears pale, it is surely only as a result of his white fur.
Politely, Usato nods, the picture of composure and dignity as she continues shuffling forward. “It is,” she agrees, “the . . .curtains and such are all very pretty. Though . . .”
She pauses, glancing briefly over her shoulder, and inches just slightly closer to her companion while placing a paw to her cheek. “. . . It would be easier to see them if they didn’t insist on keeping the place so very . . . dark.”
The house certainly isn’t warm, and it is certainly only as a result of this that Chuunosuke suppresses a shiver. “Dark?” he says with a strange, high-pitched laugh, “Is it dark? I hadn’t noticed. . .”

Summary
When you loved someone, he’d learned, you did so messily. Angrily. Clashing teeth, frustrations, flaws – they were all part of it, and much more so than any amount of the glittery, frivolous stuff found in any shop. When you loved someone, you loved every ugly part of them, just as they did yours.
When you loved someone, you did it every day.
So, to have a single holiday set aside to celebrate it made approximately a negative amount of sense. It was all so showy, so unnecessary, and the extent that people seemed to flaunt their performative affection was almost embarrassing.
Of course it was. That went without saying.
And of course he shouldn’t have been surprised that the man he loved – so completely sappy and unnecessary, himself – was absolutely head over heels for the idea.

Revelations such as this one should be surprising, but in truth it is not unknown. Citizens of London have long, in fact, suspected that there might be. The dreary ambiance, dark shadows, and shriek of bats lend themselves well to superstition, and with each of these put together it might have seemed stranger to suggest that there wasn’t a vampire in the prosecutor’s office.
Thus, in this regard, theories of supernatural suggestion are grounded in at least some form of logic. Those who place faith in this suspicion are in fact wrong in one regard, and one alone –
The vampire is not, in fact, the prosecutor.

Morale. Public image. Heroes weren’t allowed to just be themselves, and their lives weren’t only their own. A hero became a symbol, bright and meaningful but fragile and easily tarnished, and anything he said or did would affect those who looked up to him. Reputation was inescapable, influence a given – a hero was only who he was when seen through the eyes of others watching him onscreen.
Of all of this, Barnaby was certain, which left only a single possible motivation for the people who had taken him captive. The destruction of that very image, and with it of the morale of hundreds if not thousands of people.
They were going to kill him on air, and they were going to make the public watch.
