Rane does not dare bite the hand that feeds them—they barely breathe. Can only think about their mother’s soup, the broth poor and thin, the flecks of crab meat pale and miserably sparse, and Katabasian Fleck giving up his body to provide for his people, and Faulkner’s fingers in their mouth as they watch him with soft, guarded hunger burgeoning in the quiet awe of their dark eyes. The words My flesh for your teeth finally leave his holy mouth, and they watch him as if bearing witness to a beatific vision. The way their prophet fails to stifle his laughter with a bite of his lip makes Rane achingly envious of his teeth.
