Robby sighed, attempting not to be frustrated, but it clearly showed. “I’ve known Jack for years. He’s stern, sure. He’s glared at assholes who deserve it, but he’s the most emotionally regulated guy I’ve ever worked with and ever met. He’s too contained to hate anyone.”
Whitaker swallowed hard. Robby bet that if he held his fingers to the boy’s pulse, it’d beat like a scared rabbit. “Okay?”
Robby scoffed and crossed his arms, losing all of his patience. “So what the hell happened while I was gone to make him look at you like that?”
OR
Robby returns from his sabbatical, alive and with a new attitude change, expecting the Pitt to be the same. It is, for the most part, but as the days pass by, he notices a new development—tension lingering between Dennis and Jack. And for some reason, they won’t tell him what happened when he was away.

Immediately, Dennis was blushing again. Hard. Anything that previously came out of Robby’s mouth was tame compared to this charged tension in the room that Robby wasn’t even in. How did he always seem to do that?
Before Dennis could open his mouth to respond, Robby chuckled and asked, “Have you been holding back from me, Whitaker?”

The first time Robby called Dennis on his sabbatical, Dennis didn't think much of it. That was until he kept calling, and Dennis always kept answering. Before he knew it, Dennis was calling him, and shit. He was in a talking stage with his boss.

Rue brought her lips to the nicotine and shifted on the uncomfortable concrete.
Just as she did, high heels clacked in the distance. They sounded expensive. Each step was a sharp click rather than a dull thud. Not to mention the strong, rich smell of perfume flowed through her nostrils, overpowering the aroma of Rue’s smoke. Then, it suddenly stopped.
“Rue Bennett, is that fucking you?"
Rue tensed, immediately recognizing the voice. How could she not? She turned her head and, no other than Maddy Perez, stared at her with a smile.

Years after graduation, when Rue Bennett smokes a cigarette outside of a club, the last person she expects to stop and talk with her is Maddy Perez. And the last person Maddy Perez expects to comfort her is Rue Bennett.

Robby’s gaze roamed across Dennis's face, tracing the planes and sharp angles of his features like he was trying to commit them to memory. He already had a long time ago. The horrible, aching knot in his chest dedicated to Dennis was a piece of Robby that he tried, time and time again, to rip out. Always to no avail.
If he had anything to come back for, it’d be this one thing.
"Marry me," Robby said.
Robby, about to head out for his sabbatical and never return, thinks to hell with it—nothing matters except for the very real, very inappropriate feelings he's been harboring for his first-year resident. So he proposes. And before he can take it back, Whitaker says yes.

Summary
Dennis lays in the bed with a stillness so absolute it feels staged. A ventilator breathes for him in measured sighs, the sound too rhythmic to be human. It almost looks like he’s a kid pretending to sleep in the backseat of his parents’ car, hoping to be carried inside by strong paternal arms.
Robby would do anything for that to be the case. Instead, it is sedation that has smoothed away the sharpness from Dennis’s features.
It is a heart attack that has made him so still.
Or,
Dennis Whitaker fails to clear and gets shocked by a defibrillator. He takes it as a punishment for sinful eyes that can't seem to look away from Dr. Robby and decides not to tell anyone. The ER keeps moving, but Dennis's heart doesn't. It terribly, horribly doesn't.
