Summary
“Everything good?” his sub asks, angling his neck to look up at him. He looks like he actually cares and Lan Wangji loathes it; his subs know little of him outside the bedroom. He usually doesn’t care to have the separated parts of his life bleed into one another, but for some reason he feels compelled to speak the words. However much he’s blurring the lines, giving voice to it will make it real.
“My uncle is dead,” he replies flatly.
The statement hangs in the air around them. Perhaps his sub thought he would say more, but there was little to follow it up with. He’d already cut ties with the man years ago and now he was little more than a stranger, dead and decaying.
The sub looks saddened, and it annoys him. “We can end the session,” he offers. It is the wrong thing to say. He has not let his uncle interfere in his affairs for more than ten years, and he won’t allow something as insignificant as the man’s death change that.
“No need.” He slaps him harder than before. Probably too hard, as it knocks his sub over the edge.
He swallows his annoyance. Technically, that was his fault.

CuoCuo releases the ear of the dog. He looks at Feng Xin, then at Mu Qing. The kid is quiet when he’s not screaming but deceptively observant apart from that. Score one: his father is trying to take his new toy away. Score two: his father is arguing with Mu Qing. Score three: something is going wrong.
Score four: CuoCuo is a spitting image of his father. In the moment before disaster strikes, his face pinches, brows drawn together and eyes wide.
Fuck.
Mu Qing doesn’t hate his job. Mu Qing is good at it. Good with kids. Good with doing the bare minimum. Good at memorizing his manager’s credentials and never using them until Feng Xin and CuoCuo turn their fucking pinched puppy eyes on him in tandem and before he can think, he’s back to the sales system and clicking into the employee discount.

This is how Lunar New Year Eve goes for Feng Xin, with practically no deviation since he became an adult. He takes a shower, throws on a random outfit, and heads home for the reunion dinner; he just shows up and has a good time.
This year, there is no possibility that the evening will proceed that way. While Feng Xin knows that the key difference lies in the fact that he’s married now, he never expected the domino effect that it could trigger, never thought that so much could change despite seeing and living those shifts firsthand.
And the worst part? It looks like the night might shape up to be a horrible time, for him and Mu Qing both.

There was a crackle of feedback over the stadium speakers before a voice boomed, flooding the entire field.
