-Believe it or not, this is one of the fanfics that was going to stay in my drafts, never to see the light of day because it was a "kill your darlings" kind of thing what with my standards...and then I remembered Nicole Maines's run on Secret Six had released a day or 2 after issue #4 came out, and also I wasn't homeless anymore. Still in a living situation where I could get kicked out or another attempt could be made on my life at any time, but hello again, Catshot nation. We're eating crumbs, but we sure are eating, and I've got a few ideas kicking around for what I could do with these characters in the future.

When you spend several years working and living with other people on a daily basis, you get to know them more than you'd like to. And if you're that sort of person, you shoulder a little of their burdens for them. Yeah, Crane's a piece of shit, but he's not the biggest piece of shit out there. Neither is Floyd, much as he'll deny it to your face.
When given a moment of downtime, two men who should have long been dead snark about the perils of existence over a quick fuck in a hotel room. They're far from lovers, but maybe they're sort of friends in that generally antagonistic "I'd push you off a cliff with minimal hesitation, but you're also one of 7 people I trust with my personal information because you're not bad at carrying that weight" way?

Does anyone else but myself and Gail Simone remember that Catman tried to kill himself after the Cats in the Cradle arc? No? Does anyone but me remember that with the lives both Thomas and Floyd lead, they're probably not getting better but the suicidal impulses have a baseline? Also no? Alright. Goddamn. Anyways, what could be better than going out to the middle of nowhere while a mission is in progress and having a talk about the future you never thought you'd live to see where prying ears can't listen?...Honestly, probably a lot of things are better than that. But fuck it, Catman and Deadshot were never capable of anything resembling normalcy. They attempt to talk if nothing else, and that's a miracle in and of itself.

Shout out to Gail Simone for not pulling an Anne Rice and letting me play in her sandbox with her and Nicola Scott's cool toy. I absolutely adore Jeannette and think she's sorely underused outside of porn fics [RIP LiveJournal]. I've forgotten where exactly Gail stated that Jeannette is "the beating heart of the Secret Six", but at Wondercon 2024 she at least said Jeannette was her favorite to write. And I, resident Ragdoll cosplayer, took that extremely personally.

Floyd Lawton is one of these people. Jeannette is trying to break through to him, at least, however daunting of a task it is. And when he wakes in the middle of the night from a bad dream, maybe she makes a little more progress.
