Aaron’s mouth twists into a sneer and he rubs his fist across his nose, sniffing as he shakes his head.

The loft falls eerily silent. It would be almost comical, the way the entire team has simultaneously held their breath, if he didn’t feel like a lead weight was resting on his shoulders.
Hen, ever pragmatic, is the first to recover. She looks at him with an expression Buck can only call cautious, gentle and kind around the edges. “Temporary?”
“I couldn’t abandon her.” He can feel something just behind his teeth, waiting to spill out, but he can’t quite name it. “Not if I could do something about it.”

Buck is looking at him strangely—his blue eyes seeming darker than usual, his gaze intense and piercing. For some reason, Eddie can feel his stomach tying itself into knots. “What? I mean…yeah? I suppose so, but where would I find someone like that?”
“Right here,” Buck says easily, making Eddie sputter. “You could sleep with me.”

He tilted his head thoughtfully, “Or have an agent at all.”
Steve looked at him, curious. He started slowly and quietly, “Buck. Things changed...people would listen about Zola.” He’d heard that from Steve a handful of times. Never really made an impact.
Bucky shook his head, “That’s your world now. I don’t blame you, but it’s not my world.”

Not even wine is helping this night, which is particularly dreadful because everyone has had at least three glasses so far to deal with the whole situation and yet Bucky still largely and distantly feels like dying. This is fine, probably. He hopes that Steve won’t break up with him because of the sheer levels of awkwardness radiating from one family dinner. The first family dinner. Of multiple.
God, Steve’s going to break up with him, isn’t he? Bucky can’t even blame him at this point. Bucky wants to break up with himself, if at all possible.

"I don’t look back,” Robert continues, words sticking in his throat. “He’ll be behind me, following me out of hell, but the instant I look back, he’ll vanish and he’ll-“
He trails off, unable to make himself say it.
“He’ll be mine,” Hades supplies. “His life for your inability to put his needs above your own.”
