“I know it’s hard.” Mustang said once while Edward heaved into a trash can after watching one of his brothers sessions, the image of Alphonse face bright red and tears streaming down his face, shaking and screeching as doctors moved his legs and arms while he tried to placate him, holding his head, stuck in the forefront of his mind. He had sprinted out when he felt the bike burn his throat, and Hawkeye took his place. “But we need to be there for him.”
A hand was heavy on his back, rolling across his spine as he gripped the trashcan. “It feels like torture.” He gasped.
“We do tortuous things for the ones we love.”

Whumptober 2023 Day 5: Debris/Pinned Down/It’s broken
Memory is foggy and dull, wrapped in bubble wrap and spotty, like a book with missing pages, but it comes back in spurts the longer he sits and mulls with his head against a bumpy wall. A brief conversation with a man behind a desk, suitcase at his side, a mustache that curled and a marble desk that was cold to the touch. Tremors and a shrieking radio and unsteady feet. It all comes back in waves.
It’s not the first thing that he remembers though. This first thing he remembers isn’t the shaking and groaning of a building, or the sudden screams of people above and below him and the screeching of car wheels. No, it’s diving beneath a table, luggage forgotten, hand wrapped around a fistful of fabric and a little body beneath him, trying to be heard about the noise with a cracked voice.

After an earthquake, Mustang and Edward are trapped under debris. Relatively unscathed, Mustang looks for his major and a way out.

Summary
Ling is calmer than he’s ever been. Or at least, that’s what he’s been telling himself for the past hour.
He has a plan, and a backup plan, and another backup plan in case the other two don’t work. Only the first one has even a chance at working, though.
Plan 1: Inform Edward Elric that the marriage is purely for political purposes, and promise him anything he could possibly want.
Plan 2: Somehow corner the prince in a private place and threaten or blackmail him into marrying Ling.
Plan 3: Flirt with Elric and get him to fall in love with Ling.
He’s gone over this with Lan Fan a million times, and they’ve both agreed that the last two are the absolute last resorts. The plan is practically foolproof, though. Ling knows that Edward Elric isn’t marrying into Xing’s royal family for anything other than politics.
