Bill is silent, nothing but the ripple of water, the faint shouting of birds. Wind blows gently against Stanford's upset-heated skin, and he worries, for a moment, that he's overstepped. When he speaks again, his voice is quiet, almost human. Human enough that someone unattuned to the currents in his voice might not recognize what he is.
"Oh. Yeah—yeah, kid, we can play."

The rest of Rocky's bulky little carapece situates itself in the curl of my body. I complain about his sharp edges just to annoy him. He stands his ground.
He's not sharp: the suit takes care of that. I am.
There's a little groove in my 8th rib on the left side I never noticed before. Now that the fat's gone, I can feel it. It's shaped like the concave slope of a red blood cell, and reminds me of a gravity well.
Grace is a little tired.

It's stuck behind a few empty crates and some miscellaneous spare lab supplies. A few beakers. A blender, for some reason. An ironing board. Why? Because go to hell, Ryland Grace, that's why. You can't have enough fuel to come back but you can have an ironing board with no iron. Here's two kilos of cement-flavoured coma slurry. Kill yourself.
"I'm being dramatic," I tell myself aloud.
I'm really not. Dying in space is a very dramatic situation.
The ways that Rocky and Grace miss everything all the time, yet watch over each other, always.
