Kaveh was overwhelmed.
Somehow, every sound was amplified and nothing could be ignored. They couldn’t focus on what their client was saying. It was just gibberish except for a few words. Something about simplifying the design, keeping it minimalistic… essentially discarding the entire draft that Kaveh had worked on.

Summary
A migraine nestles in the left side of Alhaitham’s head. Unpleasant. He pushes himself away from his desk on his rolling chair and stares out the window to clear his mind.
He doesn’t expect to see someone staring back.
Alhaitham doesn’t startle. Just—freezes. Creep, he thinks.
Alhaitham is annoyed and overwhelmed from the construction and its loud noises on the roof above his office. However, he finds one light in the situation: a man who routinely appears outside his window, clad in a highlighter-colored vest and hard hat.

“I found the letter on his desk” Kaveh slurred, his voice barely audible against the rim of a bottle. “I read it. It was clearly written to someone he has intimacy with already. I’m telling you,” he hiccuped. “Alhaitham has a secret lover.”
“Right.” Lambad pulled the bottle away from him. “You better stop drinking before you spill all of this to him when he comes pick you up.”

Summary
They’ve had what Kaveh calls the ‘fungus conversation’ several times now. It started as a joke about the architect somehow devolving into a fungus, but Kaveh insisted on bringing it up again every so often, repeatedly claiming that at least he would be a fungus with empathy.
Meanwhile Alhaitham, presumably, would not.
Kaveh’s insistence on this point seems strange, not least of all because Alhaitham thought he knew him better than that.
Alhaitham is turned into a tiny fungus. It is not an ideal situation.

Summary
Al-Haitham expels a low groan. “Sorry,” he says, blinking wetly against the light from the window.
Kaveh is half joking when he lifts his hand to Al-Haitham’s forehead and says, “Al-Haitham, did you just apologize to me? Do you have a fever?”
Kaveh expects a snarky remark, but it doesn’t come. It isn’t before he presses his palm gently against sweat-damp skin—jokingly, still—and it feels like plunging his fingers into an open fire that Kaveh realizes he hit the nail right on the head.
“Oh. You do have a fever,” he breathes, brushing Al-Haitham’s sweaty bangs out of his face. “You’re sick.”
“What an astute observation,” Al-Haitham says.
Al-Haitham develops a fever, and with it a peculiar side effect. Kaveh reaps the unexpected benefits.

Alhaitham, whether the other knows it or not, is very aware of Kaveh’s issues.
He is a burning candle, a crumbling building, a cattle with perfected lines drawn into his body. He is a perfectionist, a people pleaser, a person unable to let the world see him as anything less than what he has shown. Kaveh steps into the world as perfect and prim, just like the architect that everyone thinks that he is.

Summary
Kaveh has tried many times to fall in love. And just as many times, he's failed. Now, an upcoming festival may force him to admit to himself that he doesn't feel it - not the romantic kind, at least. And then there are his growing feelings for Alhaitham, which certainly aren't romantic, but aren't entirely platonic, either.
And Alhaitham? He just wants to be close to Kaveh, but that seems impossible when Kaveh keeps misinterpreting his gestures.

For a few days after feeding, Kaveh’s skin takes on a healthy glow and a human warmth and if someone were to listen closely, they would hear a heartbeat, faint as it may be. But Kaveh’s skin is ice cold, and he has no pulse. His complexion is grey, ashy.
“When was the last time you fed?” Alhaitham asks, voice measured.
Kaveh, Alhaitham, the soul-crushing experience of being a monster, and a refusal to accept help (or blood) freely given.
