The road from the Glittering Caves is long, and dusty, and in truth Gimli’s new settlement cannot really spare him for the length of time he means to be gone, but he means not to dwell on that. It has been months in the crafting, his new realm, and a stress test is an important part of evaluating any new creation, as every Dwarf knows. He must allow the settlement to stand on its own, and see where it cracks, to know where it needs shoring up.
It is not as though he has left for no purpose beyond testing his construction. Legolas’s letter inviting him to Ithilien sits folded in Gimli’s inner pocket, safe from the ravages of weather and travel. He has known the Elf for less than three years—a blink, in either of their life spans—and yet he finds he has grown accustomed to having Legolas at his side, even more so than Aragorn, though they were always three together during their quest.

There’s something about the way he says his name, a tiny pause before, almost running out of air as he breathes out the word. His eyes flick away as he says it, like he’s looking to someone who used to be in the empty space beside him.

Dread ran down the length of his spine, beginning as a creeping, low sickness and rapidly turning to a cold wave washing through him. Fuck.
