Eddie Munson hates top 40 music and the mindless conformity of house parties packed with preppy teens. But tonight, necessity wins out, he’s here to sell, and they’re willing to pay. Business is good until Steve Harrington, party host and birthday boy, sits down across from him looking anything but celebratory. Tired, hollow-eyed, and quietly bitter, Steve shares a joint with Eddie, their banter teetering between sardonic and unexpectedly intimate.
What begins as a transactional night quickly shifts into something softer. Tired of being the life of the party, Steve offers to buy out Eddie’s dwindling stash just for an excuse to leave with him. They spend the rest of the night trading barbed jokes and surprisingly personal confessions over milkshakes and burgers, well chicken in Steve’s case, the menace. The party fades in the rearview mirror as Steve slowly lets his mask drop, revealing a version of himself Eddie never expected to see—vulnerable, thoughtful, and dangerously charming.

When Steve itched for any kind of physical show of care or affection he’d take it from anywhere he could get it. Maybe that’s why he dated around the way he did, one girl after another until he had a reputation known even the next town over. Always searching for something that he couldn’t find elsewhere, from his friends or his parents, longing to touch because everytime he sat a little too close to Tommy during movie nights and pool parties he’d get shoved off and jokingly called a queer.
Which was confusing, of course, because that was only until Tommy drank or smoked a bit more, enough to reasonably claim not to remember it the next morning.

It’d be pretty shitty to tell Robin now. The terrible timing might make it sound like Chrissy is asking her to stay. She’s not, she would never ask that of Robin—but there’s a part of her that just wants Robin to know. Robin deserves to know she’s loved.

Soulmates are a funny thing, and no one really knows exactly how they work, but Steve knows who his are. He still has Robin, but he’s spent years mourning a relationship he never got to have, plagued by dreams of what could have been if only Eddie had lived.
By some stroke of luck he winds up with the opportunity to go back in time and save Eddie in 1986. The universe is giving him hints, he just has to figure out how to decipher them.

Summary
After an altercation with his dad, Steve hides away in the pantry in his kitchen and calls for help on the walkie-talkie. Luckily, Eddie is awake and comes to the rescue, stealing Steve away to stay at the Munsons’ until it’s safe for Steve to go back. Steve hates when either of his parents come home to visit, especially when it’s his dad. It feels ridiculous to say but Steve thinks he’d rather face another Demogorgon.
A Demogorgon will smell blood in the water and kill on sight, but Mr. Harrington has a habit of dragging it out and making sure his prey knows they’re bleeding. The monsters under the bed are nothing compared to the monsters down the hall, Steve’s an expert. He’s known for a long time now how messed up it all is, he knows he needs out, needs help, but it feels impossibly hard. It’s normal for him and he’s dealt with it this long, he just needs to tough it out until he can afford his own place.
It doesn’t occur to Steve that he has a plethora of people willing to fight monsters at his side, whether the monsters are from the Upside Down or his own home. With the help of his monster hunting crew, Steve escapes his parents and learns what love is really supposed to be.

Max isn’t really sure why Eddie’s there too. He doesn’t seem to know either. In fact, Max is pretty sure she knows the most about this situation including everyone else who's out there in the real world trying to wake her up, or waiting for her to wake up or something? Any awareness of the outside world that they experience comes from the hospital room that Max’s body resides in. She can hear them sometimes, faint and muffled but not entirely unintelligible.

Always somewhere different so they never really know where to look for him. It's exhausting and frustrating and Steve's tired of it. Loving Eddie can be hard sometimes.
