He's tired of looking in the mirror and seeing a stranger- the beard he'd grown in the Russian prison is long and scraggly, uncomfortable and itchy, and he's ready for it to be gone.
The bathroom at the hotel they were staying in was fairly nice; the government had gotten them significantly nicer digs than the crap motel in Alaska, a place with continental breakfast and endless hot water and sheets without stains. Joyce was humming softly in the main room, mindlessly flicking through channels on the television as she stretched out on one of the queen-sized beds.

Mulder steps into her without warning, grasping the sides of her face, tilting her chin back up and looking at her like that, and at first she mistakes it and starts, instinctively, to lean in towards him. I think it’s remotely plausible that someone might think you’re hot. But then his hands are combing up through her hair systematically, as though this is a grade school lice check, as though the U.S. government’s most elite covert forces have somehow hidden a listening device in her hair without her knowledge. His fingertips grazing her scalp would be divine if the whole thing weren't so bizarre.
**After the events of s1e17 E.B.E., Mulder and Scully check each other for listening devices, with unexpectedly sexy (and emotional) results.**
