One moment Zoey and Mira were standing at the register, and the next, the lyricist snatched the stuffed animal from their leader's grasp, then the choreographer wrapped an arm around Rumi's neck and covered her mouth with the palm of her hand.
Three pairs of brown eyes exchanged glances before meeting the cashier's, who watched them with wide eyes and a slightly open mouth.
Without a second thought, Mira reached for her phone with her free hand and texted the only person who could get them out of such an awkward and problematic situation.

Summary
Mira's father is not a good father. His encouragements are double-edged, his kindness conditional. Mira is either his to shape into whatever he wants, or she is useless. Fatherhood is just business and children are just contracts to be refined.
Zoey's father is not a good father. Never listens, always silences. Zoey's never enough, too loud, too distracted, too Korean. She's more than can be handled, too quiet, too fixated, too American. Fatherhood feels like a contradiction.
Rumi's father is quite literally a demon from the darkest depths of hell. He promised his daughter would never live in shame. He'll make sure these two girls, these brave hunters, the light in Rumi's life, never will either.

Summary
She pushes her glasses back up her nose, eyes never moving from the spot on Rumi’s shoulder. Hm. They are, in fact, still there.
“Zoey,” Mira calls, keeping her voice low, not wanting to alert Rumi, because, quite frankly, she needs to talk to anyone else who isn't the source of the problem right now.
Zoey, thankfully, picks up on the tone in her voice, easily making her way over from across the compound, giving Mira a look. Mira just gestures for Zoey to get closer to her, and once Zoey is shoulder-to-shoulder with her, Mira gestures over toward Rumi.
There’s a pause.
“Huh,” Zoey decides, frowning. “That’s...” she trails off, waving a hand as she tilts her head to the side. “Different.”
“Something like that,” Mira agrees, crossing her arms over her chest. “Rumi has patterns.”
Zoey makes a noise. “Yeah. I guess so, huh?”

Summary
Rumi had learned a long time ago that her body was… more resilient than the average human. She wasn't invincible. Her body still bent and broke and popped and bled in an irritatingly human way sometimes. However she tended to heal at a supernatural rate. A broken arm healed in a matter of minutes. A gash closed over in a handful of seconds. The honmoon helped to speed up the healing of its hunters, but not to this level. Not to this extreme.
Still, the first time Rumi gets hit by a bus she is immensely grateful that 1) it is her and not one of her girls that was hit, 2) her demon healing has already started to repair her snapped spine as she careens through the air and 3) that Zoey and Mira are still in the alley way and won't have to watch this happen.

Summary
There was Rumi, still in her pajamas, curled up like a fried shrimp, and stuffed in the cabinet among the pots and pans. The sight was like something out of a cartoon, right down to the colander sitting on her head. "Help, please," she squeaked.
Something about the sight, maybe the way Rumi was twisted around, or the pathetic sound of her voice, lodged in Mira's throat. The only way to clear it was to laugh, and laugh hard. Rumi just rolled her eyes. "Ha. Ha," she said with a huff and a smile. "Go on, get it out of your system."
