What a ride! Not sure how I feel about this being tied back into canon… the beauty with AUs is usually that it DOESN’T have to worry about being canon and I don’t have to read about MW2 for the hundredth time lmaooo…
But it WAS good enough that I WILL read about it again 😩 LOL I was fully consumed by this fic!!! I was shocked that soap was out of captivity by halfway through and was like… where do we go from here?! But seeing his rehabilitation and starting a new life was interesting (and painful!!! 😭).
I think overall some pivotal moments (price as buyer, ghost going postal, Johnny's escape) lacked suspense and tension, felt too easy or going through the motions without enough build up, but I think it was just the diff between good and great. Still very good!! And to a point I was grateful for action scenes to happen quickly cause I was also racing to the end to see what was gonna happen lol
But yeah looovveeddd this. Part of my “painful fics are cathartic” crew lol wasn’t sure if I felt convinced enough of the whole price keeping Simon and Johnny apart thing, Simon get ur head out of ur ass… but the last chapter of him seeing Johnny “happy” and having a life without him? That HIT!! Lol

If this was longer wish I could have seen more of that dynamic… seeing him be more capable before the fall into questioning his abilities and his breakdown happen. Overall straight forward. The build up to “the talk” kinda felt like a whole lot of nothing tho. Really built up and like “this is so fucked” and it’s like the most adult conversation ever lol

😭 omg bruh, CRIED when ghost died at the end cause I was like wait what the FUCK 😭 but he came back thank GOD!! Nice (and by nice I’m mean torturous) little surprise there!! The bond between them felt so beautiful. I don’t totally mind the fade to black, but it did feel like I missed out a little on their intimacy. Some great moments of vulnerability still shine through tho.
This one was great!! Writing could feel a bit distant but wouldn’t say that in a bad way. And picked up once ghoap became a team with more dialogue. Denser but beautifully descriptive writing. Felt older, which I think was why I was so surprised…
…about the things that DID bother me: modern language creeping in!! Dog collecting is masters paper? Very 20th century. Sure whiskey is old, but bourbon is not (and American). I feel like there were a few other small things I can’t remember now… I get some are classic ghoap references, but still should be swapped for universe appropriate language. JUST A SMALL NOTE lmao

Really loved the first chapter of childhood-20s time jumps, wasn’t as sad as I thought would be? Or like seeing the other suffering, was more about comfort. The canon stuff didn’t feel too redundant which I was thankful for. Again, loved the longing and guilt from Simon!! Scared to be vulnerable.

While this IS a fun little romp and I’ve enjoyed it enough to bookmark and pretend like I’m gonna finish it, it does border on too woke for me LMAO. Like it’s just a little too soft, I wish they were… meaner tbh! They’re suppose to be a little fucked up (wish there were more backstory moments) but they’re almost a little too well adjusted and understanding (or at least ghost is). it’s just not as harsh and emotionally gutting as it could. I’m probably unfairly comparing it to my last read which WAS the best barracks bunny fic I’ve ever read lol. But they’re just not… adult men lol like I’m all for breaking expectations, but you can tell when a fic is based too much on an (American) authors pov. Like Soap is NOT making a movie night fort get the fuck out of here LOL please be serious.
