Susie took a deep breath before answering. Across her sun-kissed knees, her enlaced fingers were white. “I understand that,” she said, at last. “And right now, for you, that means keeping me here?”
It sounded so bloody stupid when she said it out loud. Like this was just a fucking coping mechanism, or something. A trauma response, and nothing more. And she was merely some sort of…lucky charm, for him. A source of stability. An anchor. A touchstone. Edward thought, dizzily, of the London Stone and how it had hummed under his fingers as a train passed beneath the street.
“Yes,” Eddie said. “That’s what it means.”

“Well,” Eddie said, to give himself time to think.
Calling Susie “the Glass girl” made her sound fragile, breakable, delicate. Which she wasn’t. Obsidian, he thought wildly, was also a kind of glass, and regularly fashioned into weaponry in the ancient world. But imagining Susie meeting him at the party made him remember her tapping the “and guest” on the invite with one long nail before turning to him and saying, "May I come, too, Your Grace?" Followed, naturally, by the softest little "Please," when his throat ran completely dry. He’d very deliberately avoided saying something like, "Of course I’ll let you come, Susan," or, "I’ll let you come if you’re very good," or "See, I knew you could ask nicely, if you just wanted it badly enough." All in all, it was probably for the best that Freddy and Keith and Blanket and Felix were all standing right there, watching.
(Set midway through S1E2, "Tackle Tommy Woo Woo," after just after Sabrina reveals what she knows.)
