Summary
He plunges his sword into the ground — a familiar, practiced motion. The world pauses for a moment, and he sees the purple threads of blighted chroma ensnaring Gustave; pulls, yanking them towards himself. The pulsing chroma freezes for a second, tightening around the engineer. Then, like a pouncing predator, jumps at Verso.
The world starts moving again. A wave of nausea and fatigue almost knocks Verso to the ground, and it’s a miracle that he manages to dodge the next attack.
Gustave is staring at him, trying to process what just happened.
“Run,” Verso croaks.
Or: 5 times Verso carried Gustave’s burden and the 1 time Gustave carried his.

The girl’s shoulders hunch again. An expression is battling on her face. Guilt again, and fear, and shame. And then faintly, in the soft turn of her cheek, commiseration. She watches Gustave for a long, sad moment, and then turns to a new page in the notepad. She starts writing something, and then stops, glancing furtively at Gustave before scribbling it out. On a new line she instead writes in big bold letters:
Maelle.
OR
Gustave is the local mechanic of Lumiere, an idyllic coastal village far away from the chaos and conflict of Paris. Struggling with his recent injury and the loss of a good friend, he's not quite prepared when a family moves into the abandoned Manor on the edge of town.
He's definitely not prepared for their children.

Summary
What if, in a pivotal moment, Verso had made a different decision? What if Renoir had not bothered to ensure Gustave was actually dead and had just left after making his point to Maelle? What if Expedition 33 had left the Stone Wave Cliffs before a certain handsome, brooding stranger could reveal himself?
Verso, after dragging a half-dead Gustave away from the cliff that would have been his eternal resting place in another life, now has to deal with the consequences of his actions.
Gustave, heavily injured and stranded in Nevron-infested lands without the support of his friends, needs to learn how to trust and rely on a stranger who looks suspiciously similar to the man who attempted to kill him.Bookmarked by lacking

Summary
Monoco’s station was just as it had always been, Gommage or no. The painted curves of it flowed and trailed, one long brush stroke after another. The snow stayed, and so did the grandis, the gentle petals of iron, the curve of playful trains.
Only Monoco had left. Only they had changed. And then they’d returned, and for what? To scavenge the chroma of corpses long gone to rest? To scrape the paint from a hundred abandoned creations?
Verso was tired.
“Yes,” he said, “I could have saved him.”
Or: Maelle brings Gustave back, and accidentally ties his soul to Verso. This changes things.

When guilt or shame creeped in at Gale’s wide, adoring eyes and smile, Astarion reminded himself that if he wasn't the one to take advantage, someone worse would. He was doing Gale a favor, even. The weak would be taken advantage of, and Astarion refused to be the weak.

“I only borrowed it! He's never been awake enough to ask about spares, so. It was easier to just sort it out myself.”
“It would have been easier to ask me,” Astarion points out.
“Mmmm,” Gale hums, doubtfully. “I don't know if I'd ever consider you the ‘easier’ option, Astarion, I feel that would be doing your commitment to cantankerousness a great disservice.”
I'd be extremely easy if you weren't so fucking annoying, Astarion thinks.
