Set one month after Kara returns from the phantom zone. Kara is crumbling and Lena is there to catch her.

“But over the past month I even had trouble picking out your heartbeat. My mind has been so unfocused lately that I lost that source of comfort. I guess that’s another reason why I came here today. I just needed to be closer to your heartbeat.”
That confession made Lena’s heart ache. To hear that Kara had even cared enough to memorize the pattern of her heartbeat was already a lot to process, but the fact that audible proof of Lena being alive and well was what calmed Kara down was almost too much to handle.
Blinking away the wetness in her own eyes, Lena put Kara’s hand above the left side of her chest, pressing her palm right above her thumping heart. She figured that if listening to her heartbeat already calmed Kara down, actually feeling it might be even better for her.
Kara’s reaction was immediate. She sank lower into the mattress, seemingly being able to relax her body for the first time in weeks.

Kara’s wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and a sweatshirt Lena vaguely remembers borrowing in what feels like another lifetime. Her hands are in her pockets and her head is dipped forward, but her eyes are looking up at Lena, and there’s an air of uncertainty to her that Lena hasn’t seen in nearly a year. It steals the breath from her lungs and the words from her mouth, and her lips part wordlessly as they watch each other across the threshold.
“Hi,” Kara says softly.
Her weight shifts to rest unevenly on one leg as she looks at Lena, and Lena remembers how easy it was to talk to her, once.

Lena notes the pleading tone in the hero’s voice and takes a moment to look deeply into those bold, azure eyes. Even though they’re intense, even though they’re filled with an anger Lena has never seen before, they’re also familiar. Why is that? This kind of familiarity comes with knowing someone intimately. The executive padded to the apartment door in bare feet and swung it open to reveal her sun. “Kara,” she gasped and couldn’t prevent the delighted, toothy smile that lit up her eyes.
Kara’s gaze nervously bounced from the floor to those hands to, Rao, those beguiling green eyes. “Uh, hey Lena. I was wondering if we could, um, would now be a good time to talk?”
“Yes, of course! Please, come in,” she invited with a too-eager arm flourish. Settle down, Luthor. Desperation is unbecoming.
Declining a glass of wine, Kara settled on the couch half a cushion apart from her friend. Friend? Colleague, accomplice? “Why is this so awkward?” She laughed self-consciously. Get it together, Zor-El. Timidity is so unsexy.
