But the video didn’t end there.

    “Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.

    And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.

    Just once. Just a single nod.

    Why did he have to nod?

    “Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”

    “Of course.”

    "How do you know Nonagesimus has gone somewhere dangerous?" asked Isaac. "Have you wired some kind of alert system?"

    "It's, uh. It's on the schedule," said Gideon. "I just... forgot. Because of the bread."

    Nobody was convinced by this, least of all Gideon.

    "It's a Ninth House thing," Gideon went on, backing away with increasing desperation. This was a slightly more plausible explanation, if only because nobody wanted to look too closely at what fell under the awful skeletal-ribbed and rotting umbrella of Ninth House things. "Gotta go—!" And she was out the door, gone.

    But it wasn't a Ninth House thing, except inasmuch as it was happening to the only two representatives of the noble and decrepit Ninth House on this quite literally godforsaken rock. Gideon knew Harrow had gone somewhere dangerous—knew that Harrow was back in the lab where they had only just completed a horrible trial—because she could see it, clear as day: an awful overlay on her vision of that terrible dangerous room and a pair of terrible dangerous hands drawing some kind of ward next to the plinth.

    The hands were definitely Harrow's.

    This was definitely a problem.

    Harrow was learning to be warm.

    She squirmed to turn over, stretching out so she could press her back against Gideon's long flank, shoving a pillow in place so she could comfortably stay tucked with her head in the dip between the woman's bicep and breast. Harrowhark's lover (what an odd notion) stirred, the snotty purr of her snore interrupted for a moment.

    "Good?" came her voice, loud and slurry with sleep.

    "Mmm," Harrow reassured, knowing this for a false awakening. Gideon always slept well, after.

    "Mhmhmmhm. Took care'a you good," she chuckled with sleepy lechery.

    Harrow huffed, the echo of exasperation wrapping a painful fondness. "Nav, go back to sleep."

    AKA: Harrow competes in a contest to marry Gideon, but mostly makes friends she doesn't want, patches her relationship with her brother cavalier Ortus, and tries to figure out why looking at Gideon gives her migraines.
