Quickly." Your dad cleared his throats, in hoarse guttural stereo, and then his attention was back on you as the underling made like a tree out of your room. "Right. To that end, let's take a moment to review the basics." He leaned forward in the chair he'd drawn up to the side of your bed, hands clasped, elbows alighting on his thighs. "Son, blood of my blood, what is the tragedy of this tale?"
"Whoof. Big question."

You swallow, with some difficulty; stop propping your shoulder against the jail bars and go back to holding them. "Ralsei," you say.
Your head's only half-turned from him, so you can see his attention shift fully back to you. "Yes, Kris?"
"When, we were—" You stop, inhale. Realize how chapped your lips are and lick them. "Before we left your kingdom. When you told me that my choices are important too, had you already... guessed? About what was going on with me?" Were you just saying that for them?

Gerson leans forward, forearms and elbows pressed to countertop, good eye twinkling with conspiracy. "Legend has it that our spectre is... kind of the funny sort! Bustles around doing nice things while we've got our backs turned. Never anything big. You know. Picking up litter, tucking in bedsheets, bringing those sack lunches kids forget at home." He pauses, voice dropping to a cautious rasp. "Those lost socks? They can find 'em. Just ask the librarbian and definitely not me! Wahaha!"
... Well, you hear Chara say, call me biased, but it looks pretty well cinched from here. That sounds exactly like a monster.

A year later, Frisk and Chara make another trek to the very end of the Ruins. They get sidetracked on the way home by rumors of a ghost.
Naturally, they investigate.

Every time someone says it is, like... it's a bell, ringing low and sonorous between your ears, deep in your chest. In a good way. Chara would probably call this "resonance", if you asked them. You won't, but whether or not you've horribly misunderstood the term what it boils down to is that the name sings through you like it belongs. It makes you happy, and it was all an accident, and that's—it's sort of—that's a little bit terrifying, isn't it?
Only a little, though, Chara points out.

Summary
"Everything about Dave is wonderful, especially when it's not."
Three years after the game ended, the kids and their guardians live together as a big, goofy family, and John is so happy he could explode. The thing that makes him happiest is Dave. They are the best snugglebros and everything is perfect.
Except that people are giving John looks like he's missing something important here, and he's not sure he wants to figure it out...

About as good as it gets in terms of John/Dave that is unrepentantly sweet-natured while at turns snappy and clever and keeping quite firmly in mind just how flawed these boys are, even as they adore each other and have matured a bit since being dingus thirteen-year olds. (Its sequel Amazing Places is also well worth checking out: A portrayal of Dave and John in a by-and-large functional(!!) relationship that actually works because they remain recognizably themselves throughout. See also: Gorgeous scenery by way of Yosemite National Park.)

A showcase of the sort of slow and careful relationship progression I enjoy in longer fic. Also goes a ways towards filling those "Davesprite deserves a happy ending" and "John's a sweet kid but needs to learn when he's being a callous jerkbutt for no good reason" holes in my heart. Jade, Nanna, Jaspers and Casey are all present and accounted for in very appreciable ways!

Is there more John♦Karkat out there? I can't begin to tell. I think I could subsist on this portrayal alone for a good while, though. Elegant and aching and healing from the top of its head to the tips of its toes, this fic.
