“You okay, man?” Eddie asked when Steve stayed quiet.
“Yup.”
“You sure?”
“Yup.” But it sounded shaky even to Steve’s ears. Tears fell, and when they came with sniffles and small tremors that settled along his shoulders, he didn’t bother stopping them.
He was just so. Damn. Tired.
There was a shuffle to his right before he heard the passenger door open and close, and for a moment, Steve thought that was it. That Eddie was going to leave him to his own devices and head home. Occasional patters came down on his windshield as the rain eased and made way for the cool October night. Maybe camping out in his car wouldn’t be so bad if the storm stayed like this.
There were two soft taps of knuckles against the driver window before the door opened, a vague thought crossing Steve’s mind when he remembered he forgot to lock it.
A ringed palm hovered beneath the steering wheel, just under his gaze and in a voice, softer than it’d been since he arrived, softer than Steve thought he’d ever heard it be, Eddie said, “Why don’t we get you outta this rain, pretty boy?”

Summary
Request from zerokrox-blog on tumblr: the party is at the Hopper-Byers house for the July 4th celebrations and Steve has a really bad nightmare caused by childhood trauma/abuse mixed in with Upside Down horror. He wakes up but is still lost in the nightmare + PTSD from the fireworks. Eddie can't calm him down. Nobody in the party can calm him down, he isn't fully awake. Its terrifying. What calms him down is Wayne, speaking in low tones about Garfield, and the weather and Eddie. He refuses to talk to anyone about the pleas and desperate sobs of "no..get off" & "leave me alone" but is extra clingy to Eddie & Wayne once he comes out of the flashback. It's also the 1st time he calls Wayne 'dad'

Steve looked over at Eddie during these moments and pictured his future rewritten. A future where instead of Nancy Wheeler or some other nice girl sitting passenger in their RV, Eddie Munson would be there. Eddie would be tucking kids into bed and reading them stories. Eddie would be making road-trip trail mix and packing a cooler with water bottles and juice boxes. Eddie as his life partner, the constant variable throughout anything. It no longer felt so scary to think about it. The fact that it wasn’t scary to think about in and of itself was scary but Steve has handled scary before.

It’s addressed to Edward Munson, but the preprinted Hawkins High address makes Steve flip it over and break the seal with his finger, knowing Eddie won’t care. It’s probably some sort of fundraising thing; they need a new gym, last he heard from Joyce, and had been annoyingly trying to get money from everyone in the town.
That's not what it is at all, and Steve has to read it twice to make sure he hasn't lost his mind.
