Emberflit Alley is as unappealing as always: damp, dark, and far too narrow for Jayce’s wings. He supposes there aren’t as many avians in Zaun, but it doesn’t stop the agitated rustle of his feathers. He would turn tail and retreat to his house if not for his current predicament: Viktor’s been missing for weeks, so Jayce is in this dingy swamp because he’s looking for the Machine Herald. Secretly. And for purely logical Defender of Tomorrow duty-related reasons, of course.
Or: Viktor and Jayce engage in unconventional bird courtship with much misunderstanding and bickering involved.

----------------It starts with a small chunk of carapace, broken off in Viktor’s hand. He stares at it blankly, turning the piece over between his fingers until it disintegrates. It leaves a fine dust behind, crumbling into his palm until all he holds is ash. Only then does fear turn cold in the pit of his stomach, and he nearly trips over his feet as he runs to the single mirror kept in the home. After a frantic search over his body he finds a gap in the shell that encases his shoulder, a faint light pulsing through from within.
He traces the space left behind, mind racing. What does this mean? Is this a shell shed, simply a renewal of the carapace, a lifecycle similar to a crustacean? Or is it decaying, dying off slowly as he stands here?
Was this body not able to survive without the Hexcore’s control?

Carefully he opens the front panel to the sight of multiple papers jammed in an almost artistic way. Some of the papers are folded and seemingly forced into the rollers, while some papers are straight up scrunched and thrown into it with little ceremony. Jayce stares at it for a couple of seconds, before he tilts his head to look up to Mr. Reveck, who is not looking at the printer.
He is looking at him.
“This doesn’t look like an accident, Mr. Reveck.” Jayce tries, glad that his voice doesn’t sound as he feels.
“Doesn’t it?” The smaller man’s tone became light, almost curious. With grace he puts his book aside, taking his cane to step up, coming to a halt next to him.
“How strange. I merely tried to print a rather lengthy report, mayhaps the paper was of poor quality?”
