“I don’t know,” Mello says. Something strange crawls through him as he looks Near up and down. “It’s, uh…”
A litany of different words come to mind. Tacky is one of them; creepy is another. The longer he looks, though— the longer he drinks in Near’s knee socks and plaid skirt, his blouse and blazer— the more he starts to like it.
Which he kind of hates, honestly. This kind of thing is up Matt’s alley, and that’s who the target audience is, but Mello has always considered himself a little too classy for something as lowbrow and gauche as a schoolgirl fantasy.

Summary
“What’s happening?” Near asks.
“I’m not sure,” Mello says. “I think we might’ve been kidnapped.”
Near makes a soft sound of disapproval. Mello bristles at this, because it sounds like Near is mad at him over their abduction, even though it’s obviously not Mello’s fault. Shutting his eyes for a moment, he reminds himself that Near is probably feeling super-scared and vulnerable, and that, considering the situation, he may not be thinking through the potential implications of the sounds he’s making. He probably didn’t mean for it to seem accusatory.

A dire situation tests Mello and Near’s ability to work together, bringing out the good, the bad, and the intensely sexual.

Summary
Hanahaki Disease happens in three stages - red carnations, to symbolise love and passion; yellow carnations, to symbolise rejection and disappointment; and white carnations, funeral flowers. The disease is caused by unrequited love, and can be cured either by receiving a confession or undergoing surgery. Once the flowers turn white, though, the disease becomes terminal.
Near knew exactly three things about his condition when the petals started coming up. One, he was in love with Mello. Two, Mello wasn’t in love with him. Three, one of those things had to change.

Summary
Near wakes to find himself in a soft, inky darkness, completely unable to move.
His paralysis is not immediately noteworthy to him. At first, as he is rising from the depths of unconsciousness, it strikes him as quite natural. Comfortable, even. With his mind still half-blanketed by sleep, his thoughts slow and blurry, the weight bearing down on him feels almost like an embrace.
This thought is what first brings his attention to the strangeness. Physical affection— physical contact, full-stop— is not part of his daily life. The only people who ever touch him are doctors, dentists, and Mello, though Mello only grabs him when he is about to walk through a puddle or into an obstacle, or, occasionally, when Mello is especially frustrated with him. No one embraces Near.

Summary
Two years after the end of the Kira investigation, Near reluctantly agrees to investigate a series of murders in Denver. What he's expecting is a dull, uninteresting case that he'll solve before the plane has even landed. Instead, he gets a killer who seems to have no rhyme or reason to their actions yet somehow evades capture anyway and still has time to send him cryptic messages with horrible grammar.
Mello has been lying low for the past two years, but when he hears about the serial murders, he heads to the city to investigate. Normally, he wouldn't bother, but there's something different about this case— Near may be in more danger than he realizes.
Not that Mello actually cares. That would be ridiculous.

Summary
Since the beginning, their entire relationship has been a game of cat and mouse, and they've both become good at playing it: both of them are still waiting to see who will make a mistake first and lose the game. The fact that they’re meeting up every other night is only because Mello wanted to settle his debt with Near. This arrangement they have now is only temporary; they’re only doing this because Near is using Mello to gain information, and Mello is only using him for sexual gratification.
Or at least, it seems to be that way… Mello usually wears his heart on his sleeve but lately he’s been strangely distant, like he’s been hiding something important.
That, plus Near still hasn’t seen Mello’s soulmark yet.

Mello puts on her pitch black combat boots and ties the laces, all the while ignoring Near’s peering gaze.
“Let’s just,” Mello says. “This never happened, OK?”
