It happens all at once: one moment she's buzzing, barely aware of her body, her mind back in the lab calculating angles and covering sixes and watching Andy, always watching Andy--and the next moment her stomach is churning with that same sick swoop of oh fuck that she'd felt when she had turned around in the lab and Andy was gone-
And then Nile was in the back of a car, wedged between Nicky and the door, and the air was stuffy with blood and sweat and car-smell.

"Maybe it’s the way Nicky is holding him as time dances clumsily across the decades, maybe it’s the decadent despair of grieving a man that’s standing right next to him. He’s tired in that way that old oak creaks when you press your palms to it. That way it splits, splinters down the spine if you push too hard. "Yusuf hums non-committedly, pulling away from Nicolò to lean back against the bench beside him. He digs out an arancia, the citrus sweet smell filling Nicolò’s nostrils, and rolls it around in his palms absentmindedly. Nicolò catches his eye and raises one questioning eyebrow.
They definitely don’t have enough between them to afford an indulgence such as this, unless Yusuf traded some of his labour or artwork for it. But Nicolò knows that the only orange blossom tree that grows in this village belongs to a merchant family, and their youngest daughter has been covering the stall. Which means-
“A gift, Nicolò. Isn’t that nice?” Yusuf says in way of answer, pleasant and naïvely pleased in a way that Nicolò usually finds endearing."
In which Yusuf is gifted with oranges, and Nicolo has a minor crisis.

At times, it seemed like all they did was no more than a single raindrop of hope in an ocean of despair and chaos, but together all those raindrops had evidently helped. Copley had captured it all, the last one hundred and fifty years of their lives condensed down into a few dozen photos and newspaper clippings. It seemed so small, and yet, all encompassing at the same time.
Kind of like how a declaration of love in a van during an abduction had condensed down all nine hundred and twenty years of an epic romance into a few hundred words. It seemed an impossible feat, but then, his Yusuf was just the kind of guy to pull it off.
