“Dude, you have a fever,” Newton frowns, pushing the back of his hand invasively into Hermann’s temples. Hermann scowls and unsuccessfully shies from his touch, swatting him away. “I do not.”
“You do,” Newt props himself up on his elbows to get back in Hermann’s face, the annoying twat, wrapping his fingers around the back of Hermann’s neck, which he knows Hermann is helpless against.
“If I’m so feverish then get away from me,” Hermann snaps at him, utterly incapable of the bite he wishes his tone to have.
“No way,” Newt insists, pouting a little. “My baby is sick and you want me to leave him? That’s sick, Hermann, pun not intended.”
Or; sometimes it takes a bit of a fever for Hermann to allow himself the affection he craves.

“Can I- can I ride your thigh?” Newt finally gets out, panting, gesturing to the thigh of Hermann’s good leg.
“You want to grind on my leg?” Hermann asks him, and hearing Hermann say something so very crass knocks a sound out of Newt that has him covering his mouth.
“None of that,” Hermann is scolding him now, taking hold of his arm, “Let me hear you, or I’ll stop. Understand?”
Newt nods so enthusiastically his glasses slide down his nose.
Or; Even the heads of research need a little stress relief sometimes. And sometimes that involves learning a little something new about your partner.

But Hermann remembers it all— he remembers wondering when Newton would come back, and then wondering if Newton would come back, and then eventually agonizing over when he’d see Newton again, and then if he’d see Newton again.
He remembers seeing Newton again, and it not being Newton, and he remembers how knowing Newton may never exist again hurt worse than him leaving ever did.
He remembers hating himself for liking seeing Newton in the hospital— because the hospital bed was proof that Newton was alive, that he was human, that he was something worth saving. He’d always been something worth saving to Hermann. But there came a time where he was helpless to save Newton, that nothing he could’ve done would erase the irreparable damage done to his perfect brain. Hermann hated the feeling more than he’d ever hated anything.
or; Hermann has awful separation anxiety. Thankfully Hermann also has a very attentive partner.
