He blinks. The reflections of bloodstained water fade from the walls until the tunnel dissolves entirely, giving way to one of the station's interrogation rooms.
“Hm?”
Sat across from him is a detective Tim doesn’t think he recognises, sympathy pinching the corners of her eyes.
“We want to figure out who was responsible,” she says. “I just need you to tell me anything you can remember, anything you might have seen before you found Sergeant Chen.”
His mind draws up buzzing static. Vague shapes and silhouettes.
“I don’t… I don’t know.”

Summary
His heart shatters when Lucy covers her face with her hands, anguished cries echoing off the walls. The sound rips straight through him, and Tim almost says fuck protocol, wanting to pull her in and hold her close.
But all too soon he’s thinking of the microscope they’re about to be put under—how the brass will be looking at every second of this through the tightest lens, ensuring the integrity of the investigation isn’t compromised by their relationship.
So, forcing himself to take a deep breath, Tim tears his eyes from Lucy and pulls the wall up.

Summary
Instead of packing her things away and leaving, Lucy pulls something out of her bag.
As she returns to stand in front of him, she’s shaking her head gently, and Tim’s never felt more confused in his life. He’s frozen, still down on one knee, the velvet box still outstretched in his trembling grip.
The confusion only grows when he clocks the watery smile adorning her face. He has no idea what’s happening right now.
But then his eyes flick down, and he finds there’s a small velvet box in her hands, too.

Lucy takes a step back, then pauses. “Do you ever leave before dark?”
His eyes lift to hers, sharp and unreadable. “Usually not.”
“Why not?”
He shrugs. “Fewer interruptions.”
“Right.” She gives a small laugh. “You know, I’m starting to think my joke during the interview wasn’t such a joke. Maybe you are a vampire.”
Tim doesn’t laugh.
For a second, she thinks he didn’t hear. But he had; his eyes flicker, quick, like a warning light.
“I mean,” she adds hastily, “you never eat, you never go outside, you don’t like sunlight—it’s kinda a pattern.”
He holds her gaze for a moment longer, then says simply, “Good night, Lucy.”
She feels heat climb up her neck. “Good night.”

Tim took a step closer, his heart pounding in his chest. He swallowed hard, suddenly feeling like the air between them had thickened. He had to do this. Had to say it. Had to fight for her. “I told you I still love you,” he said, his voice low. “And you didn’t say it back.”
Her breath caught. He saw it in the way her chest rose and fell, in the way her eyes darted away. He saw the flicker of hesitation in her eyes before she looked down, her fingers fidgeting with the keys. When she spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Tim, I—” she began, but he cut her off.

Tim smirks, her heart thunders in her chest, and she takes a single step closer to him.
“Whenever that may be,” he says, and then he’s raising the glass to his lips and taking a long swig. Lucy mirrors the movement and then licks her lips, the tequila burning down her throat as Tim stares at her, his own lips wet with the whiskey he’s clutching in his hand.
“Tim,” she breathes, because despite the fact that he hasn’t let her be afraid yet, she is a little bit.
“Lucy,” he murmurs.
She doesn’t know who moves first, just that, later, it keeps her up at night.

Chenford hooks up during the missile threat and there are consequences.
