In a world where Humans and (Pre-reformed) Vulcans co-exist on the same planet, for the past 30 years, the Vulcans have been living with a huge problem. Usually a celebrated (somewhat violent) ritual, Vulcan males afflicted with Pon-Farr have become deadly threats to their mates, with only male-on-male mates able to survive the plak-tow. The Vulcan female population has become decimated, with only 1 female to every 10 males, with few children born since.
Desperate to save his people's already weakened population, Chief Sarek of the Northern Vulcan tribe, seeks the assistance of a new (only 1 century old!) Human settlement; The Kingdom of Kufanikwa. The deal: The Humans receive protection from other human tribes and a myriad of other benefits (and don't go to war with the Vulcans), and the Vulcans will receive 10,000 Human women to add to their numbers, including the King's eldest daughter who is to enter into a marriage with Chief Sarek's heir, Spock.

Nyota Uhura returns to her second year of Starfleet even more determined to make a name for herself amongst a slew of cadets all of whom are fighting for the attention of their instructors, but especially of the esteemed Admiral Christopher Pike, soon to be Captain Pike of the flagship U.S.S. Enterprise. All Nyota wants is for her summer internship to go smoothly, to do well in her classes, to secure a single dorm room, and to finally master the fundamentals of Vulcan. However, her plans are neatly upended when one of her instructors, Lieutenant Commander Spock, proves impossible to please. Both stubborn and aloof, Spock is Starfleets only active Vulcan officer, and Nyota's only opportunity to learn his language. To prove her competence to Spock, Nyota joins an extra-curricular Linguistic Olympiad team for that year's Language Preservation Summit.

Summary
Kirk blames Ambassador Eivom for getting grabby with his tentacles, making Kirk and Uhura have to excuse themselves early from the dinner before it became a "diplomatic incident".
Uhura blames the evening's dense ion clouds over Plarton 5 for making shuttle transport back to the Enterprise too dangerous, forcing them to risk beaming aboard before Scotty's adjustments were complete.
Scotty blames the unstable rotation of the oceanic planet and Plarton 5's unusual fluctuating gravity for his mistake in calculation.
Keenser blames Scotty for spilling coffee on the console just as they were hitting the energize threshold mid transport.
Whatever the cause, the effect remains- while Lieutenant Nyota Uhura and Captain James T Kirk were beaming aboard the Enterprise, the Transporter malfunctioned and their bodies were swapped.
This is the story of what happened after.
