“He’s gotten into his head that he needs to take me on vacation. And he’s planning on sticking around until I agree to go.”
“So are you going?”
“Do you think I should?”
Dad folded the newspaper over itself and smoothed it down on the table. “I know better than to tell you what to do.”

"If they kept talking eventually they’d talk about the thing they really, really shouldn’t talk about. BJ might be forced to say -- well, say something he couldn’t even form mental words around. Even worse, they might stop talking and wind up doing something BJ couldn’t excuse his way out of. "

Summary
He kept pacing, finding sure footing on Peg’s blue subway tile flooring. His hands subconsciously flexed and curled.
“Did something set you off?”
“No! It’s stupid, I just,” he waved a hand loosely in front of his chest, “felt it all well up right in here. Panic, but without anything to panic about.”
“You don’t have to make your trauma make sense on my account.”

“Beej?” Hawkeye’s voice was coated in panic.
“Yeah, I’m here.”
Two hands gripped at BJ’s shoulders and the front of his scrubs, still tacky with blood. “Did you stop them?”
“What?”
“Back in the OR. They were trying to suffocate that poor boy - did you stop them?”

“Have you ever had a sex dream about someone you shouldn’t?”
The tell tale creak of Hawkeye’s bunk as he sat down. “I have. All the time.” Hawkeye paused. “Listen, it’s normal. Especially under stress and when you’re hurting for human contact.”
“Yeah,” BJ acquiesced, still not looking across the tent at him. “I guess you’re right.”
“Who is it, Beej?” -

“Are you asking what I think you’re asking?”
“Yeah, Beej.”
The idea was new territory for them. Sure, they’d made love before, but what Hawkeye was proposing crossed all sorts of lines they’d never mentioned let alone crossed. BJ could see little point in discussing things they couldn’t biologically be or do. On the other hand, he hadn't seen Hawkeye this riled up since that afternoon on the beach in Maine last summer. -

“I’m sorry I didn’t warn you better.”
BJ sighed. “I mean telling me he tried to kill himself painted a pretty vivid picture.” Then he winced. “Sorry, that was - I’m not trying to be bitter.” -

“Why the hell are you here?”
The sudden hostility threw BJ off, although he supposed he should have been used to it. Hawkeye had a short fuse since his extended stay at the end of the war. BJ couldn’t help but laugh in shock. “Because I miss you and I’m worried about you?”
“You know what Margaret does when she’s worried about me? She calls.” -

Summary
A year ago he would have been so good at this. He would have plucked a piece of broccoli out of Ben’s box and kissed the offended look off of his face. He would have elbowed him and asked for every detail of his trip in excruciating detail until the food got cold and his grumbling stomach interrupted. He would have wordlessly tucked himself into Ben’s side and enjoyed the movie, enjoying Ben’s inevitable furious scrolling of IMDB even more. But now he was hyper aware of his every movement, making particular care not to touch or linger or do anything that could be construed as an advance.
