Summary
“You’ve done well.” Mother’s voice is soothing and soft, and her hands are steady as they sift through his hair, slicking the strands back with syruped sweat. He leans into the touch, coarse and calloused, yet terribly careful. Her nails scratch an itch in his scalp.
He purrs, burrowing himself into her scent, so like his, yet so not: the taste of metallic demon, overpowered by sweet humanity. He had forgotten this scent. He knows it now.
She shifts, and her hair falls around them, a curtain of white. He shivers as the ends brush his skin, cold as ice. She snows them in, her blizzarding hair, her wings of clear sky, shrinking the world to only them, parent and child. He grapples for the warmth of her skin, the swelling tissues under thin flesh, so pink, so vulnerable. She winds around him, sinuous and tender, a silent invitation.
“I’ll always protect you,” she murmurs, a phantasmic thing, and it is sweet to his ears.
Cain only ever wanted to be loved.
