'As Ponyboy regained further consciousness, different sensations began to make themselves known. The most obvious being in his chest. It felt heavy and stiff, as if he couldn’t breathe- but deep, methodical inhales came to him anyway. There was a loud gush that followed whenever his chest would rise and fall. He knew he wasn’t doing it on his own though, he didn’t feel the rush of air down his throat. All he felt was this… firm, almost tube-like object trailing down into his lungs. Wait, what?'

It almost works, until Ponyboy Curtis is floating in the park fountain, cold and blue. Dally finds himself pressing down on Pony's limp chest, whispering prayers beneath his breath between gasps and whimpers.

When he was a child, death fascinated him. It was terrifying, and mysterious, and uncharted, and beautiful. The cowboys riding off into the sunset, the soldiers riding into battle. It filled every inch of the stories he was told. Fairy tales, myths, cowboy ballads-- his father sang him Streets of Laredo as a lullaby every night until he was six. He only stopped because it always made Soda too sad.
He had spent lots of time thinking about death-- anytime he’d look at the stars, it wouldn’t be long until he found himself wondering and yearning for something he couldn’t place. What was beyond them, if anything? What were they made of? Where did they go in the daylight?

Pony looked down at the table. He felt the sting of rejection before the rest even came.
“They said if I couldn’t prove I could handle everything, they’d ship him off to a boys home till he aged out.” Darry explained, voice quiet now. “Having a foster kid is part of me provin’ I could step up.”

Ponyboy has been shuffled through the foster system long enough to know that nothing good lasts. When he gets placed with Darry and Sodapop Curtis, he’s ready to keep his head down and not get in the way. But staying out of trouble gets a lot harder when the people around you start to feel like family. Especially when one mistake could mean tearing that family apart.
